I have a 9 month old red nose pit bull. She occasionally holds one of her back legs stiff for about 5 seconds at a time. She doesnt cry and when she holds it stiff she continues to walk or run or to do whatever it was that she was doing. What could this be from?

That is a condition called luxating patella, where the kneecap slides in and out of place, causing the leg to go stiff like that.Eventually,it wears a groove in the bone and then the kneecap wont stay in place at all, causing lameness.I have an 8 yr. old boston terrier with a mild case of it,and I dont expect to ever have surgury done, but if it is happening frequently, you are eventually going to have to get it fixed,as it can be very painful.

My last dog Jess used to run with one leg cocked up like you would see small terriers do when they run, it was so funny!! I didn't think it was a problem but I think it's totally different to yours. I will read your post again.

can dogs get that when they are so young? can you have your dog screened for it, like with hip displexia(sp?)?

ignergehl - are you a vet? Have you seen and tended to this dog? If not please don't inform people of a condition their dog has. Only a qualified vet can accurately diagnose the problem.

So djohnsen take you dog to the vet to find out for sure!
