Hello Everyone! Im new to the board and I have a questions. First of all Im glad I found this site and I think Ya'll are a great group of people. Anyway, My family and I decided to get a dog last week and we went to animal adoption agency and found a pit/boxer mix, she is a 1 year old Mama dog that had recently lost her puppy. Last week Some Stupid *** through her over the fence at the agency in the middle of the night with her baby puppy and the other dogs killed her puppy right in front of her. I knew right then I wanted this dog and we choice her, we wanted to take her home that night but the agency said they had to spay her and we could bring her home on Monday. Well the next day they called my husband and told him that someone brought in 10 baby puppies and our dog (Zoe)immediately ran over and started nursing. They asked us if they could give Zoe and the puppies to a foster family for a few weeks so they could nurse and so the foster mom could bottle feed the babies because Zoe didn't have enough milk, but I feel its doing the puppies and Zoe good to have each other for a while. This dog is the sweetest thing, My, husband and seven yr old daughter already love her). We visited her and the puppies at the foster family's house on Saturday and they were doing great. The foster family has 4 children and 5 dogs of their own and she shows no aggression towards any of them.

My problem is the hard time Im getting from other people regarding this dog. They make it sound like Im neglecting my child by getting her. Should I double think this? I know most of you probably own full blooded pits that have a good backgroad. Should I be skeptical of finding one at the adoption agency. I didn't go in there looking for a pit I just wanted to help a dog any dog in need and it just so happens its a pit mixed.
Ive been trying to educate myself the last few days on pits and pit mixes and I wanted some advice on you experts out there. Any help/advice would be greatful. Thank you.

hi megan, i just wanted to say congratulations on your new friend. it brightens my day when i hear stories like yours. i'm sure zoe is very grateful. i'de say that she has a solid temperment. if she didn't they wouldn't have put her up for adoption. don't worry about what people say about your dog they'll see how sweet she is, they don't know anything about the breed, they're just going off what the media has told them. how old is she? you might want to watch her around your daughter incase she plays rough. good luck!!!!

She and your daughter met? If so, and everything went fine, they should do well together. I also agree with what benny boy mentioned about the adoption group temperament testign the dogs, most check temperaments thouroughly, and wouldn't place a dog that wasn't safe. Supervise their interactions together, just to be safe (I would tell you to do this with ANY dog, of any breed, not just pit bulls), but I think they'll do fine together. Pit bulls are known for being great with kids, and most adore children.

Our own two pit bulls are most likely purebred, but both are from unknown backgrounds. One has been raised with my two nephews (10 and 8 yrs old) since their birth, the other, we just got February of this year, she's never been around kids before. Both are great with the kids, and the second has socialized with numerous other kids and even a few babies at her training classes, been great with all.

Sinc ethey always say seeign is believing, here are a few pics of Goo with "her" kids...

Sorry about the poor quality of this one...

Congrats on your new addition, and thanks for considering a rescue dog

I'm very happy for you, your doing a great thing by helping this dog. Dont listen to what people say, because in my posting I said that dogs are being stereo typed. not all dogs are the same, If you feel this dog will do good with you and your family then you should get her and give it a try. I have a pit bull/ Amstaff, and she's great with kids and other dogs. she's very friendly, and when i was going to get her people told me that their visious dogs and i'm just putting my family at risk. But i never listened, i still got her and she's a great dog. As long as you teach them the right things from wrong you have no problem. Dogs are never born visious, people make them like that for their sick reasons. so as long as you have the time and patience for one, you'll do fine. their great dogs.

Thank you all for your advice, We got to bring Zoe home last night because all her milk dried up. She is a very smart dog, she already knows where her bed is and she slept in it all night long. Im so glad we have her. Did I mention she is cross eyed? It is the cutest thing when she tries to focus on you. I LOVE her so much already. Im taking her to the vet today to get some good flea and heart worm medicine. Thanks again to all of you!!!

Thanks to all of you. Goob, the pictures you posted are so cute. You guys have totally eased my mind about my decision. I took Zoe to the Vet yesterday and she had a tempature of 104, the vet said she has an infection in her nipple. It was really swollen. He gave us an antibotic to clear it up. She has only had two doses and she seems to be doing better already. Thanks again for the encouragement. Im so happy we have her.

Hey Megan hows zoe doing ? When I got my Pitt Brandy from the rescue shelter , I heard nothing but crap from my niehbors as well , In fact one of them said they would buy me a lab if I took Brandy back ! I was in no way going to take brandy back , She was so sad in that shelter , that is why I picked her in the first place ..

I never set out to get a pitt at all , but she captured my heart and the rest is history ..

Brandy is great with my little girl . My little girl was 5 years when we got Brandy and at first I was a little nervous because of all the crap that my neihbors said , but Brandy is very good with my little girl and more tolerant than any dog that I ever owned ..

I would like to here from you to see how its going ..

Hey I just wanted to tell you your not alone, everyone in my family was mad that I was getting a apbt because of my 3 and 4 year old. My perants have since changed there minds and are thinking about adopdting a pit. Justice(my puppy) is the best dog I could have asked for, he is so easy with my kids. Even my 4 year old son that is crazy. He loves my kids and would never hurt them. Justice walks fine on a leash when its just me and him, right next to me. But if i'm walking with my wife and she is pushing a stroller with the kids he pulls me so he can walk right up with them.

I think you made a great choice, I hope you post some pics up soon.
