I'm not sure you train them at all. They will either bark at strangers or they won't. In my experience most of them do protect their property by barking. My overly friendly female barks to alert where as my cat-munching and dog mauling male won't. Weird hey???

pit bulls usually aren't aggressive towards poeple unless they feel that you are being threatened or they sense that you're scared. is that what you want in your dog? or do you want him to be more protective? i don't see why you would need him to be more protective. i only want my dog to be an ***hole if he needs to be,and that's why i like pits bc i've read that they have a sort of discretion when things happen. if you want a dog to be really protective you might want to consider another breed such as a rottweiler, or a sharpei(sp?)

YOU DONT!

If you want a guard dog get a Rott or GSD and leave pits out of it! Pits are not goo guard dogs by nature and due to the hystaria behind them you SHOULD never teach on to be mean!

good post desertapbt!!! i agree. pits are not good guard dogs. they will protect you if you are in danger, what do you want to train them to do? whatever it is it's probably not a good idea.

If you are rough with your dog and encourage it to be aggressive,it will be dangerous to everyone. If you love your dog and treat him w/ respect,he will be friendly to everyone, except the fool that breaks into your home.Despite the popular idea that'pits arent good for guard work',if you dog loves you and your family,it will know when it is needed!Ive seen myself,MANY times!

I BELIEVE PITS ALREADY HAVE IT IN THEIR BLOOD TO PROTECT THEIR TERRITORY AND DON'T NEED TO BE TRAINED TO BE NASTY. MY WILLIE IS VERY PROTECTIVE OF ME WHEN I AM HOME ALONE. IF YOU COME TO THE DOOR HE WILL JUMP UP IN THE WINDOW AND SCAR THE CRAP OUT OF YOU. BUT IF I TELL HIM IT IS OK THEN HE WILL BACK OFF. THIS IS THE WAY I LIKE HIM TO BE. HE LISTENS TO ME VERY WELL. WHEN HE KNOWS EVERYTHING IS OK HE WILL LICK YOU TO DEATH!

OMG ATTACK OF THE CAPS LOCK KEY!!!!

do you people realize it is very annoying to see ALL CAPS when you are trying to tell us something? It looks like you are yelling and, it grates on peoples nerves.

Please break your capslock addiction and use the Shift key anytime you need to capitalize a letter.

Jesus.

And, why would you want to train a pit to be a guard dog when they have enough bad crap being said about them as is. Have you not read books or looked around online. Pits are not good guard dogs. They shouldn't be used as guard dogs.

Way to go, let's screw our breed over some more! -_-

Sorry.........I'll try not to use that all caps if it is that annoying.
And I wouldn't train my pit to be a guard dog.
I will stand up for the Pits all the way!!
