Hello everyone. My pit is prone to yeast infections in her ear. I usually get her to the vet right away but this time money is EXTREMELY tight and when I called the vets office to ask if I can just buy the medication this time without an office visit they said no, she needs to see the vet. I am all out of her drops. Is there anything I can try at home? Please any advice would be great. She's been pawing at her ear and shaking her head. And there's a strange smell. But other than that she seems fine, she still plays with our other pets. IP: Logged |

Does she have allergies? Often allergies are a major contributor to dogs getting ear infections. It could also be her food, if there's something in there that doesn't agree with her. I think too that in some cases, dogs living in places where it's usually moist/damp outside can be more prone to infections because their ear canals have a harder time staying dry. My dog used to get ear infections after wading (even with cotton in her ears to help keep them dry), and often when it was really rainy in the spring, or during fall, when it was moist out again, and leaves, etc were molding, and her allergies would be starting. Call the vet and ask if you can set up a payment plan with them, $10 a week or so until you pay the bill off. There are some homemade remedies that you can use to clean goopy ears, BUT if she's having recurring ear infections, they're not going to stop unless you track down the underlying cause and fix it, so you'd just be fighting symptoms, rather than the actual problem. Growing up I had a dog that was very prone to otitis (ear infections). When my parents split up money was tight. The vet recommended that I get ear cleaning solution which is about five bucks a bottle, not too expensive and clean her ears once a week. Also, something else they said to try was vinegar and water and clean the ears out well. Some people try peroxide but I cannot say it wouldbe all that great. The thing is that vinegar kills infection. My dog had a vaginal yeast infection and vinegar and water helped it. Also, with a lot of women's products today, if you read the labels, they contain vinegar. I would water it down though, like 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 water. Angie IP: Logged |
