i just recently bought a new 1yr old female rat terrier and her mate who is also 1yr old. They are very scared and bark at me when ever I come near them. Then they retreat to a corner and shake becoming stiff as a board. I feel like they might bite if I tried to touch them. What should I do? Seperate them, crate them to be able to handle them more, leave them alone to come around on there own etc. etc. etc???

What I would try is get sorta close to them and place a treat on the ground then walk into another room and see if they grab it. After a while they will think you are their friends! Good luck!

If they are backed into a corner and you try to pet them I would'nt doubt that you might get bit. Do not try and force them...they need to gain your trust. I agree with using treats...try and intice them to come to you with something really yummy. Kneel down and talk softly to them and try to avoid direct eye contact. Be patient...Im sure they will come around.
