Now for my second question and I am sure there are many other people interested in knowing the answer to this.. Our home is getting terrible. The smell of pee is turning into an ammonia smell and it is so bad that we hate to sit in our living room. We shampoo the carpet at least once a week, but as soon as it dries the smell comes back. We cannot pull the carpets because we rent. It is one of those really cheap carpets that is not a shag and has no length to it, sort of like a door mat kind of carpetting. Anyhow, what can I use to get rid of the smell?? It is driving me NUTS!!My thoughts were before shampooing put baking soda all over the carpet to sit for a while.. then shampoo with water and white vinegar. Put more baking soda to absorb all of the moisture and stench, then the following day when all is dry vacuum up the baking soda and then reshampoo with a pet odor and stain remover that I have (THAT DOESNT WORK) but it will help get the vinegar smell out.. will the vinegar smell come out..? I am not sure which is worse to live with vinegar or doggy pee?? Someone HELP!! I need some help before I go all out and do more than I should or do a lot that won't work.. Thanks.. Angie

You may find this thread interesting. http://www.auspet.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000333.html

Thread is about cat pee smell but might give you a few ideas.

Cheers

P.S.
Most carpets have some form of an underlay (spongy thing right under the actual carpet). This layer will retain the smell even after you clean the top layer. Therefore, my guess is that only a product that can penetrate and brake down the ammonia would really work.

I had that problem badly with my pitt and his 3 kittens. Yeah my pitt had 3 kittens well he thought they were his. Anyway I used to use a product called mint oil its a green liquid that I would spray into the carpet. I also used febreeze sometimes that doesnt last long but it got the cats to stop urinating in those spots. I also tried some pet fresh that absorbs odors followed by the carpet spray that foams up and dries in about 5 minutes. That worked really well. Oh by the way I found that the mint oil was great for killing fleas too. I found the mint oil at our local grocery store (Rouses) Well hope this will help some what.

I have found great success pouring straight bleach over the stained area. Surprisingly it has never affected the color of the rugs. Of course you need to take your animals and run away, because the gas that is produced will knock you over. But it has really worked for me, and I am hypersensitive to smells (particularly pee!)

Ouch.. Febreeze has been proven to be VERY harmful to pets.. will look for the article I have saved on it and post it.. I found somethign that worked.. I done the carpet with white vinegar and water (1/3 vinegar/2/3 water) then redone it with OUT! Cat Spray & Urine Stain & Odor Remover (Found at K Mart for $5.00!!!) and then after that because I wasn't to fond of the bland smell and needed fresh Mountain Breeze smell.. lol.. I redone it with a cleaner.. I usually use Mr. Clean or Scented Pine Sol or somethign.. I find it works better than normal carpet cleaners.. even works good on getting stains out when you put it in with your laundry.. lol.. The vinegar was a gross smell while doing it.. but it was well worth it.. You walk in and have no clue that we even own pets that have ever went on the carpets.. Now if we can keep it that way.. lol.
