There are a variety of things you can use for them. Some people swear by taking a burlap bag, rolling it up, and taping the ends.... others will do the same with a pair of jeans. Some prefer to use those braided ropes you get from the petstore. I've even seen a few that use real animal hide, though I imagine that would be a bit of a smelly and unsightly option. I don't like the burlap much because of the worry that they would get a tooth caught and rip it out if they lost their grip, and my dog spits out the jeans rolls like they're poison, so I use ropes, either the store-bought kind, or just 2' lengths of 1" or 1 1/2" rope.

Another thing to remember is to not have any metal pieces where they dog can grab them, I keep any clips/hooks at least a foot up off the rope, so the dog won't grab them and break a tooth on them.
