Hi Everyone I just came across this forum while browsing the net. And just thought that I would add my knowledge of the breed to it. I am a retired dog groomer and pit bull owner. I have also showed the breed UKC, and am staff, and staffy bulls AKC. I worked a pet dog groomer in the Flint area of Michigan and left the profession only 8 months ago. In Flint we have a very large population of pits. Especialy after they were banned in Pontiac and Waterford. During my time as a grooming I recieved a number of bites from various breeds Only one requireing plastic surgery. The majority of the bites were recieved from small dogs. These particular dogs were untrained and unsocialized. And the owners were clueless about animal behaveior and the way an animal thinks. I have never once in the 17 years that I worked with dogs either showing or grooming been bite by a pit. The problem with dogs that bite is poor breeding, training, responsiblity of the owner, and a lack of knowledge about animal behavior. The biggest problem with pets owners today is that they feel that they gave birth to there pet and treat it like a child and not an animal.

I treat my dogs like they are my children. My dogs are mined better than my children at time.I have never had a problem with any of my pits.I have been around pitbulls for 20 years and have been breeding them for 6.My dogs go to school,we have homework at night,we have play time in the evening, and they have their bed time.
My dogs are more than just dogs, they are my very heart and soul.I love them as much as I love my children.I want to know how you can treat a dog or any pet like just onther animal and be able to say you love them?

jules....I have to agree with you. Part of my problem with my APBT was that I loved him too much...not a bad thing really, but when it comes to aggression and dogs this can be a huge problem especially if the dog see's itself as more important (alpha) than the owner. Duke has improved greatly, but still questions once and a while who's boss...I always let him know by simply rolling him on his back when he feels the need to be dominant..this is not always easy, but earns his respect greatly

P.S. Duke's animal aggressive...never human aggressive

I disagree pitbull_princess.... dogs are not furry little people and should not be treated as such. Dogs think differently than humans, act different than humans, defend themselves differently than humans, communicate differently than humans, and overall are different from humans. When people start treating their dogs just like their kids and attaching human emotions and behaviors to them, they're setting themselves up for huge problems, and the dogs always pay when something happens.

I think some of those "than"s should be "froms", but there's no edit button on here so sorry about that

It is cool that you disagree with me.I do not expect everyone to agree with how I raise my dogs.Just as I do not agree with alot of ways other people raise their dogs.I expect people to do what is best for them and their dogs.
The way I handle my dogs has never been a problem. It may be for some one else though.I am for anything that makes the owner and the dog happy.
My dogs are like my childrem,I love them just as much, and you love your dogs different. That is what makes us all different. And that is cool, becuase who wants to be just alike...I know I don't.
