Dog don't "turn", there are always signs that they're going to bite, the problem is that people either don't pay close enough attention to notice, are too ignorant of "dog language" to see, or don't want to admit there's a problem until it's too late and the dog has bitten someone. And then there are the ones who KNOW their dogs are aggressive, but once the dog has bitten, won't tell because they know there could be harsher penalties if it's found out that they knew the dog was dangerous beforehand (the owners of the Presas that killed the woman in SF only got off on manslaughter because it couldn't be proven that they knew the dogs were dangerous, if it could have been, they would have been facing 2nd degree murder charges). Now, who in their right mind would tell someone something like that and face years in jail when they could just "play stupid" and end up getting fined? And you just prove your ignorance by saying this: "they can and in alot of cases will turn. It has been proven to many times".... hmm... lets compare the ratio of pit bulls that have "turned" (I'll assume that by "turned", you're referring to all that have been involved in fatal attacks, no matter what the circumstances were) vs pit bulls that haven't turned. There have been approximately 60 fatal pit bull attacks since 1979(I think?, if I'm wrong, someone fix it), and there have probably been upwards of 1 million pit bulls alive since 1979 (according to one shelter in detroit, there are over 100,000 "pit bulls" in that state (michigan) alone), so according to that, out of every 100,00 pit bulls, there will be 6 that will attack. While every dog attack is devastating to the victim and their families, or a larger scale, there really isn't much cause for concern. Statistics have shown that you have more chance of being hit by lightning than you do of being killed by a dog of ANY breed... you even have more chances of being killed by a PLASTIC BAG than you do of being killed by a pit bull... better start lining the house in rubber and using paper If a pit bull (or ANY dog) attacks a person without serious provocation (direct threat on owner or themselves), they need to die. It's not typical of the breed, and not acceptable for them to do so. That doesn't mean that the entire breed (whatever breed the dog was) needs to be deemed "aggressive" or "dangerous". Human agressive pit bulls are an anomaly, not to be taken as "normal" for the breed. For you to believe that that type of behavior is typical shows your lack of education concerning the breed. sorry I crossposted, this was meant for here. Yes Goob, I like your style. Jlong, If I was a doctor, would I be a psychologist also? You training to get into the vet field really scares me. PB aren't perfect. No dog is. all common sense. You are not an expert on dogs, let alone PB's. IP: Logged |

Thanks I agree with what Russ has said, it's important (and absolutely necessary) for a dog owner to know their dog, know their dog's limits as to what it can/will tolerate, and make sure that they do whatever's necessary to keep both the dog and any person/other dog they encounter safe. It's their responsibility, NO ONE elses. It makes me sick to see people blaming dog attacks on the victims, who often did nothing wrong, but had/have to suffer needlessly because irresponsible dog owners don't want to do what they should. If I am at a public park with my dogs and I see another dog that is off leash............... Err... I should say another dog that shows up after I have already established my presence there.
