I have owned a APBT since 1981, and love the breed. They're one of the most loving breeds, I've ever owned. They are not the breed for everyone, and that is the problem! Neither are a lot of breeds.
As many breeds,it takes a lot of dog handling experience to really know your breed, and how to handle it. Pit Bulls were breed to be dog aggressive, NOT human aggressive. Yet, I keep mine with two mix breed rescues. No problem, I train them well. All I've ever owned, have only one problem, and that is to want to lick everyone they meet...
I have owned many breeds, German Sheppard, Doberman, Rottweilers, mixed breeds, and I must say the Pit Bulls, I've owned are the most people friendly dogs of all.....
I'm a little afraid of Chows, Cocker Spaniels, Saint Bernards, and very afraid of Dalmantions........But I don't want them banned!
I am a very responsible dog owner, for I love my dogs, and I never take a chance on something bad happening. Any breed care be dangerous to people, and you have to learn to know your own dog and his habits...
It is very true that the wrong type of people have attached to my favorite breed, but they would decide to go to your favorite breed next.....They breed poorly and train with abuse.
I have found the Pit bull to be the worst Guard dog, I've ever seen. If you came to my house, only the Pit Bull would be licking your hand as you carried my property out.
I also understand, why the general public has become afraid of the word Pit Bull.
A lot of people have come to my house, and are so shocked when they find out this super friendly and loving dog is a Pit bull. One man said he thought they always killed people! That is the man my dog, really fell in love with. That man left with different thoughts than he arrived with. He learned not to believe everything you read or heard in the media!!!!!!!Half of the reports are not really true Pit Bulls and there are well trained and well breed Pit bulls.....I have one and everyone, who meets him wants their children to play with him. He really loves every child he meets.
If we start banning breeds, because of bad owners and breeding, we will someday have only cats and horses.....
The only way is to start making owners responsible for their animals!
All Pit Bull owners are not low-class gang drug-dealers. We are middle-aged upper income working class. We are very concerned about this misunderstood and badly abused breed!!!!!!!
Learn before you make such big decisions, for there is a lot of wrong informations out there. This breed needs proctection, not banning.

Nice post Jnet,

I agree and can relate to all that you have said.

If someone broke into my house, they would find 2 sleeping dogs snoring away.

If they woke up, they would probably follow them to the van so they could go for a ride LOL.

Kids can tug on ears ride on the backs and pull tails. These dogs don't mind it at all. Its all part of the fun and play. Even an accidental poke in the eye wouldnt bother most pits.

You are right, the middle aged upper income class is the right template for a pitbull owner.

Drug dealers, low level people and dog fighters don't come here to voice their opinion or share their knowledge.

I don't want to drag anyone into my current debate, but do you find what I say to be true or false. The reason I ask this is because of this post. I agree with what you have said and I think your opinion would have some weight. If I am wrong, I can get over it. So please let me know =)
Its just that I have hit a speedbump and have no intelligent feedback to my posts.

I would appreciate it
Regards,

Russ

Russ,
I agree that the owner's of these dogs should be held totally responsible. They are breeding and training so poorly, that the entire breed is getting a bad rap.

I've never had a Pit Bull who wasn't super friendly to people. I am now, very careful where I get a dog. I got my last one from one of the top breeders in the USA. He comes from a long line of champions. He was breed for temperment and beauty.

The dog aggession is so strongly breed, for such a long time that it will always be there. It can be handled,if you know what you are doing. I do not allow any play to get out of hand. No growling at any time. I growl and everyone goes to their place.

Thanks for defending these wonderful dogs. They need all the * good* support they can get.

The people you are trying so hard to explain to have never really known a well-breed and trained Pit Bull. They have only seen the ones being dragged down the city streets on a large chain, or watched the horror stories on TV. They're on the stories, for they get attention...If I had not known this breed for many years, I would wonder about them also.

There are bad Pit Bulls, as there are bad apples in all breeds. I can handle anything, except a Dalmatian. I help out in a spay/neuter clinic and meet all breeds and have yet to meet a bad Pit Bull. Have been dragged down the street by a Saint Bernard, had to hide all animals from a Golden Retreiver for he was so animal aggressive. Have seen a lot of breeds do crazy things in the clinic. But, the vets and help all love Pit Bulls, for they are easy to handle and are so friendly.......

Hi Jnet,

Thanks for your reply, I was starting to wonder if I was having a brain meltdown.

I'm glad to know I am on the right page still.

It's a shame what some breeders do to the breed, and its a shame that they would give out a bloodline that is so, so ready to destroy, to unqualified people. I suppose this is how the circle starts.

(To everyone)
But in all honesty, the dogs that fight are not man biters. They would be culled instantly. For organized matches, There are 3 people in the ring. Also the other opponents trainer will bath his opponents dog and vice versa, so as that no one put pepper sauce, drugs or whatever on the neck of their dog to ward off a good hold.

I do not condone dog fighting, have never watched or intend to watch one, but have read books on the topic, thats all.

If anyone is planning to get a pitbull, get it from a responsible breeder, take your time, find the breeder first, before they have pups, go to some confirmation shows or weight pulls. Watch the Sire and bitch, see how animal aggressive they are at the show. Alot of pits at a show will be pulling so hard on their leashes, to go see another dog. A good eye can tell how serious the dog aggression level is.

LOL at bull breed shows, your leash has to be less than 4 feet.

Did anyone know that some pits that weigh only 40 pounds can pull a cart on a rail that weighs 4000+ pounds loaded with cinder blocks.

Sorry for rambling on, I do this alot when I think about my dogs.

Russ
