My beagle, whom I'm sure many of you have read about, who think I'm a completely terrible person, eats and eats and eats. We have the to take hte food away from her, because she won't quit. Is this normal for her age? She is around 8 weeks.

Well from a former beagle owner I know exactly what you mean. The best thing to do is feed her I think like a cup three times a day til she is older and then cut it down to two times a day. That is what I was told to do with mine and then finally cutting it down to one time a day but of course increasing the food amount a bit. But to be honest my beagle was so spoiled I free fed him so needless to say I had a beagle that reached 52 lbs at one point and had to be put on a diet. I just felt bad for him he was my baby LOL But my beagle also mastered ANY trash can I had to get into it and get the scraps from dinner. He was very smart. So watch out!! LOL HE even mastered getting ontop of a trash can at the end of our counter and got onto the counter to find food. Beagles are all about food. My best advice to you is not to start table scraps or any kind of people food. Cause once they get the taste of it you are done LOL You get begging all the time and those sad little eyes looking at you everytime you eat. Their nose always gets them into trouble. So I don't know if this helped you any but just thought I would share my experience with my beagle. Good Luck Beagles are an awesome dog to have!!!

Lauren, I am glad you did come back. I know you recieved alot of criticism. Lots of people are opininated on this issue (and well should be) and I know some harsh things were said by some people. We all make mistakes with our pets and I know you are here for advice and to learn some better ways to take care of your puppy. I am willing to give you any help that I can. When I first got Brute, he ate alot also (somehow, my other dog Bailey wasn't like that). I gave the measurement of dog food that was on the bag and he still wanted more!! He eventually got used to the feeding and stopped begging so much after a few weeks of having him. I feed my dogs twice a day, dividing out the measurement that is on the dog food bag in half. If you feed them more it isn't good for them and they can gain weight. When I accidently overfeed my dogs, sometimes they get loose stools or diarrhea. By the way, treats are good snacks for training but just be careful not to overdo it cause of the overfeeding thing. I think it also helped Brute get over that "ravenous" feeling too! Good luck with your puppy. I hope I was able to help you somewhat. PS - Another thing I wanted to ask is Have you taken her to the vet yet? Because you may want to check to see if she has worms. I had to deworm my puppies once I got them (they were littermates from the same litter)even though the breeder I got them from said they were up to date on the deworming. The overeating/hunger thing could be a symptom of worms so you need to get it checked out just to be safe!! Good luck with your puppy!

Sounds normal...from what I understand most Beagles are chowhounds and simply love to eat. I would put her on a feeding schedule of 2 - 3 measured out meals per day.

Dont free-fed the dog, just take the food away every night like I do. Dogs dont have self control in the eating department. LOL ann

Ok i dont really know whats going on here. I've been away for the hoildays. but i love anything beagle. so i thought i would help ya out! well trike my beagle, wont stop eating she just loves it. so i dont know i guess it might be a normal thing. (even thought they dont look it, beagle are very active dogs. she might need the extar energy!?!) i hope i dont get any hate mail for letting my dog eat when she wants!! if its costing you to much money then only feed her at certain times. but also she a puppy ( i have and hopefuly will never own a puppy!!...scared of them!!!) so she might need to eat more. i am not to sure, but my best bet would be to ask your vet, he or she will alway put you in the right direction. and dont be afraid to ask them anything. they will help you too. but its great that your here. and good luck!!!

Ray is right. Annie, you need to calm down. All you are doing is insulting rather than trying to help. Enough already. This board is here to educate and help people not to insult them and be rude. Also, you are not in the position to tell her not to come here, that is up to the moderators who run this board. Everyone has a right to be here and ask questions. LaurenB said she is trying to do better by her puppy, she wants help and is asking for it. In the dogs best interest, you should try to help her too. We are all adults here, we need to act like it.

I suggest you go to the library and get a couple of books about raising puppies. Relying on the message boards for such basic information is ridiculous because you will just get too many differences of opinions and what you want is some basic, expert advice.

Have you talked to your vet about how often you should be feeding your dog? Often vets will have pamphlets that will be helpful. Your vet could also recommend a book or video for you.

But, honestly, on message boards you can get tons of good advice, but you have to know enough about dogs to be able to separate the good advice from the bad. Head for the library.

(BTW, Annie - don't stop posting - your outrage IS important information!)

anne, i love how you have edited you post to actually sound like you care about her feelings now. whatever. anyways, i dont feel that her (annes) outrage helps, nor anyone else.

the vet is your best bet. but it is a good thing that you have come looking for advice, rather than trying to wing it.

and you dont have to have much knowledlge of anything to ask a question.
