Somebody help me!! Me and my boyfriend just got a pure bred beagle. She is around 8 weeks old. We are trying our best to housetrain her, but it's not working. We take her outside, and say go to bathroom Roxy, and she does, but how can we get her to tell us when she has to go the bathroom?? Does this happen, when she is older?

Well your beagle is 8 weeks you've got sometime before your pup starts letting you know. My Yorkie took a whole 10 months to house train, but yorkies from what i've learned are very very hard to house train, now he goes outside all the time. And I believe I was very consistant with his house training, My pekeapoo miette is sixth months she getting better but I have to admit I've been very laxed with her. so i've been shampooing my carpets about every 8 weeks, I know this isn't good to do it that often but it not from miette going to the bathroom it's mostly from the mulch they drag in from the back yard... ok getting back on topic you have a few more I'd say months since your dog is only 8 weeks before you see some results I would suggets buying a very good carpet shampooer in the meantime.

The pup is only 8 wks old and still a baby. You can't expect housetraining to happen overnight. It will happen over the next few months. I would take her out about every hour and when she goes give her a treat and lots and lots of praise. Remember not to punish her unless you actually catch her in the act. Punishing her afterward and she doesn't understand what she did. If you catch her, tell her "Outside" in a stern voice and take her out. Then praise her again when she goes in the right place. I wouldn't let her have full run of the house until she is potty trained. If you choose to, a good idea would be to put the dog on the leash and tying it around your waist so that she is with you and you can watch her. Also you should be crate training her. Make sure it is the right size and not too much room, otherwise she will use one corner of the kennel for bathroom purposes. It really does help in housebreaking. Another thing is at this age you need to make sure you let her out a couple times a night because at this age they just can't hold it through the whole night. A key to figuring out how long they can hold it is the age (2 mos) plus one so about three hours. So probably a couple times a night. Having a puppy is just like having a human baby. You need lots of patience. Everything gets easier as they get older. Good luck and remember this site is a great place to come to if you have problems.

Also take her out every 20 min to a half hour after eating and drinking. Puppies at this age can only hold their bladder for a very short time.
Please be patient with your new pup. They are still babies and need time to mature before being a completely well behaved dog.

After reading your other post on spanking your pup and now expecting miracles of it at 8 weeks old I really wish I could come around there and take it off you.
You're clearly not responsible, mature enough or have the time, patience & love to care for and raise a happy healthy dog.
We all come to this forum for ideas, advice and just to have a shoulder to cry on sometimes. I'm not sure why you're here.
I'm sorry if this hits you harshly, but it's nothing compared to what you're doing to your new puppy.

Lauren--I hope you take all of this crtisicm to heart. You can expect miracles at 8 weeks. SHE IS A BABY. She will learn. My Shih-Poo is almost 12 months old and is still going in the house. Dogs are a huge responsibilty. If you dont have the patience or time, I think you may need to rethink owning a puppy. Good luck.

Lauren,

What everyone else has said is true. You need to watch your puppy all the time. When you can't watch her, she should be put in a crate where she can't get into trouble or get hurt. You need to take her outside at least every 2 hours and also after all changes in activity (after eating, after playing, after naps). You should also be taking her out during the night - she can't hold it while you sleep!

If you catch your puppy messing in the house (and you should if you're watching her carefully), don't spank him. Say NO! in a deep, authoritative voice, pick the puppy up, and take him outside to show him where he needs to go.

If you keep a careful eye on your pup, you should be able to tell when she has to go by changes in her behavior. She might lose interest in play or sniff around. Every dog is different, but you'll pick up on this pretty quickly.

Your next question was about how to get the puppy to tell you when she has to go out. When I was training my shihpoo, whenever we went out, I would say, "Sophie, let's GO OUTSIDE" and get the leash. I would make her wait by the door for a moment, leash her up, and then take her out. Now she'll sit by the door if she has to go or if I say, "Do you wanna GO OUTSIDE?" she'll immediately go to the door and wait. It helps to pair the command with the action - but remember to use it every time so she learns!

Oh, and don't forget - when puppy goes potty in the place you want her to, lots of PRAISE!
