Chino is a beautiful 20 week old Staffy x Boxer pup. He is the most affectionate, loyal and loving pup imaginable. When we bought Chino at 8 weeks old, my husband and i were both working part time so someone was always home with the little tike. However our circumstances have since changed and my hubby has returned to full time work from last week. Now Chino is alone a lot more than ever before. He is showing two signs of separation anxiety: he doesn't eat while we're gone, and when we return, his response is overwhelming, he jumps up, scratches and generally becomes our shadow for the rest of the evening. I would dearly love to get a second dog for Chino but my husband is dead against this idea. Can anybody help...either to convince my husband that two dogs are betta than one, or to convince me that Chino is fine on his own for 8 hours a day?? IP: Logged |

I take it coming home at lunch time is out of the question. Do you keep your dog crated while you are gone? I had the same problem with my dog, when i would get home from work, he would go nuts...(jumping on me) I was told by a trainer that: you should ignore the dog when you first come in the house. If he starts to jump on you, turn away from him, and go about your business for about 15 min. Then give the dog attention. He said that you shouldn't reward bad behavior, and that's what I was doing. It took a few days, but he caught on and stopped jumping on me. Also I made sure I spent time walking and playing with him every night. That's all I could do, I had to work. He seemed happy enough to me, I know he loved me, and I loved him. (he's in doggie heaven now) miss him sooooo much! Good luck to you! Sincerely, Susan IP: Logged |

What did he do when you turned away from him? Did he keep jumping on you and then eventually give up? Because I have tried the no attention thing with Nala, and she goes more and more nuts and starts nipping and ripping clothes.

When Ranger jumps on us, we first shove him off, and then we make him sit, before we will give him any attention besides teh command and the shove. We have a friend who shoved his lab so hard when she jumped, that she did a somersault and jumped no more! It hurt her, but not enough to injure her or anything, just enough to make her stop!
