I have a 7 month old Afghan Hound pup. We've had him since he was only 4 weeks old. We started trying to crate & house train him the day we got him. Here we are.....still trying to house train him. I have tried EVERYTHING in the world, & can NOT get this dog house trained. He is crate trained, & will let me know if he needs to come out to potty. If he is out of his crate though, it is a different story. He won't even make a sound, or go to the door! He gives absolutely NO signs that he needs to go out. He just goes in the house, wherever he pleases. I correct him with a stern "NO", immediately take him outside, & if he poops, I throw the poop outside. Still no luck! Any advise???????

What else do you do besides crating as far as house training goes?
If possible you should keep your eyes on him at all times while he is out of the crate so that if he starts to go or looks like he is about to go you can get him outside right away and prevent any accidents inside.
Even though he is 7 months old I would take him outside often (hourly if you must) and tell him "Go pee" and stay outside with him until you see him go. The second he finishes give lots of praise and a treat. Be consistant and make sure you give lots of praise when he "goes" where you want him to go. You can also use a phrase such as "Gotta go outside?" each time before taking him out. You can even try making him "Speak" at the door before you open it to let him out. This may help him learn to bark near the door when he has to go out.

Nern, I watch him very closely when he's out of his crate. He will not give ANY signs that he has to go. He will be standing perfectly still & just stand there & start peeing. He doesn't sniff around, or even walk around to let me know that he has to go. I have 2 other younger pups, so I take all of the dogs out once an hour. He will go potty sometimes. Other times, he will goof off & play around for an hour (litterally) then come inside & does his business!! I've tried taking him out on a leash, but it's basically the same thing. He is leash trained, but he has an EXTREMELY short attention span. I always praise him (& the other pups that aren't house trained yet) when they do their business outside. The pups are only 11 weeks old, & are catching on very quickly. I just don't understand why he's doing this, why he's so hard to train, & why after 7 months of consistancy, he isn't learning this. Thanks for your advise though.

Hi Meka, I heard that there was a spray that you could buy at the pet store, that you spray in the places that the dog "goes" and they won't go there again....I don't know if it works, because I have never used it myself. My vet told me, to give my dog a one word command when she needed to "go". So I use the word pautty (I can't think how to spell that "sad huh") anyway, it worked for me. She already knew what: you want to outside meant. Some dogs are just much harder to train than others...Hope you have better luck..SOON.... Susan

What Nern said was good - I think that you need to take him out hourly and praise lavishly when he goes. Lots of treats too. Make sure he does not have full run of the house until he is fully potty trained. Tie a leash around your waist and make him stay at your side, that way you can watch him. If you can't, put him in the kennel. Don't give up on him! Some dogs are just slow learners and will eventually get it. Another thing is that I noticed you said you got him when he was 4 weeks old. That is way too young to be taken from his mother. Did someone give him to you at that age or do you have the mother on the premises? Also, maybe take him to the vet to rule out any medical problems (kidney, bladder, etc.) Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone..... I've tried everything in the world with this pup. I was told that Afghan's are just very stubborn, so hopefully he'll get out of this soon! I won't give up on him!
