just in the past week, the dogs have had lots of ticks. The rain brings our tick season. So I was wondering what everyone uses. An old vet told me he didnt like to over medicate dogs. Like the treatments that have multiple uses. So he said to use Preventic collars. So I use these - need them for about 6 months and I use sentinial for heartworm/flea prevention

Just for someone to even mention TICK makes my skin crawl. We had no less then 7 dogs that died from ticks when I was a kid and sadly I watched all but one die horrible deaths!!! My parents just kept getting dogs to replace the ones that died. It didn't seem to bother them much, where as I would bawl for weeks. We had a collie, german shepherds and mixed breeds that all died from the dreaded tick!!

If I had of realised what an irresponsible owner was back then, I would have screamed at them "NO MORE DOGS!!!" but as I was only a kid and a big animal lover, I was excited everytime a puppy was brought home. Very very sad!

We use Revolution one of the multiple uses. I have only used it for one month and have already considered switching.
This is all the stuff Revolution does:

Prevents heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) disease
Kills adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and prevents their eggs from hatching
Treats and controls ear mites (Otodectes cynotis)
Treats and controls sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in dogs
Treats hookworm (Ancylostoma tubaeforme) and roundworm (Toxocara cati) in cats
Controls American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) infestations in dogs

I'm wondering if I really need to be concerned about all these stuff like mange and ear mites. Aren't those more things you treat when they occur? Also Revolution doesn't protect against the deer tick which is the tick that spreads Lyme disease. However, my vet's office said we didn't have the deer tick around here.

My sister uses Advantix on her dogs and she says it is working very well. She has found a few ticks on her dogs but they all were dead. I don't see where this product would be over medicated because it is just heartworm/tick/flea prevention all in one, which is what you do anyways?!?!

Just a thought....

I think he meant the revolution, this was like 6 years ago when it first came out. like you said, I would ratherr treat if they do come down with mange, ear mites, which in their 6 and 1/2 years they never have and are tick is only seasional, so I need to use it 6-7 months out of the year. I also like the pill form sinceJake and Wylie get on our couch and the stuff you put on their back makes a mess. We use sentinal, a heatworm, flea and worm combo

Do you think that because the Advantix doesn't claim to prevent heartform but only to kill and repell mosquitoes that it is safe enough to protect against heartworm? I need to do another dose on Max so I need to decide soon what it is I want to do.

I used to use Heartguard for heartworms and I think that does fleas and ticks as well - I would have to look it up again. The cats got Advantix.

Our new vet gave Nala Sentinel and Frontline (took two visits and two different vets to get it straight that she needed both). But I found a tick on her a week or two after her last does. What the heck?! (I always have trouble believing that the one spot on their backs will spread over the whole body...)

The cats are now on Revolution because it kills heartworms, which I did not even know until recently that they can get. The mouse vet (she's not JUST a mouse vet but that's what we bring to her) says that they don't like Revolution so they give their clients' cats feline Heartguard and some other flea product (I can't remember which one - don't think it was Advantix).

The Sentinel does not kill adult fleas - it makes them sterile. I'm not sure I like that.

This is an issue I am researching but still unsure about. It's time to buy the next monthly doses of whatever, so I need to decide!

There are also natural remedies, like garlic powder and brewer's yeast supplements. There was another thread here at one time that had a recipe for making a spray with lemon and rosemary (I think) to apply topically. The person who posted it said it works so well, they use it on themselves when they go for walks in the woods and no bugs at all will come near!

I need to find a vet I trust and make a decision. Argh!

I used to use advantix Bayer, came in to our vets office and did a big presentation on it and sent me home with 4 6 month supply boxes and I hated it! I still had ticks on the dogs when I used sentinal and I never found one! Plus for thos of you who have cats advantix is HIGHLY TOXIC to the kitties. I had to seperate my clan from each other for several days. You were probably using advantage Jamiya bc advantix is loaded with toxins that cats can not handle. Advantix does not kill heartworms and does not do anything but repel mosquitos which is more useful for things such as west nile. If you are using advantix as your heartworm preventative you really need to get them back on something like heart guard. I dont think heart gaurd does any prevention on fleas.
My two favorites so far are Revolution and Advantage. I thought AdavanTIX was going to be the miracle prevention I was looking for but it fell short on me in the long run when I was pulling around 12 ticks off of each dog that were still alive! Right now I am using advantage for my kitties and advantage and heart gaurd for my pups. I would never stray from heart gaurd unless it was something like a proheart injection. To me it feels the most reliable.

Hrmm that's very odd about the Advantix, I just spoke to my sister again about this and she loves it for her dogs. She said she has found more fleas but they all have been dead. I wonder if you were using the appropriate amount for the weight of your dog. I'll assume so I would just hate to discount it because of one bad experience, especially because like you I thought it would be the great "catch-all". Has anyone else had experiences with Advantix?

Jimiya, why not just use sentinal for the heartworm/fleas and and preventic collar. The collars work great and I only need to use them 6 months out of the year. they can only be found at the vet, So I would ask your vet about this.

I am leary of using tick or flea colars. I have heard of them causing problems with releasing to many toxins. All of my dogs are bt 60-80 pounds (accept my chi lol) and I used the biggest dose available. I have seen a few other problems with it. However I have heard others rave and rave about it. I just have no tolerance for ticks so I am sticking with what I know works. Otherwise I will lay in bed at night wondering if they are crawling all over me and my furkids.

I have only seen one tick in my whole life..it was on a stray Cocker Spaniel I rescued from certain squashing under a big rig. Removing it was awful...a friend said I should burn it's butt with a match...this didn't work well, and I ended up taking him tothe vet to have it removed. Funny that I can't handle a tick...makes me sick just thinking about it, but if you cut your arm off I'm your girl for rescue! Anyhow, I put tea tree oil in not only our families shampoo but in my dogs shampoo too. It will repel fleas lice ticks and what have you...so I've been told. I started doing this because my daughter came home with head lice one day...I was horrified. Someone suggested it and neither of my kids has ever gotten it again. Since them I have heard that it also repels fleas and ticks on dogs and cats so on and so forth...I don't know for sure that it works but maybe look into it.

I am going to try the tea treeoil - every time the dogs come in the are coevered with ticks and all the tick stuff out there doesnt repel - only kills when they bite - so Jake gets nasty bites. So then they bring them in the house for use to get. This season is really bad
