Hi, Is there anyway to tell the difference between all the different kinds of skin problems dogs can get? My new dog has a largish bright red patch and some fur loss(an oblong patch) on his throat which bleeds if he scratches and he is starting to go after his back at the base of his tail. (I've now got a buster collar on him.) He's a GSD mix and I know they can have skin problems - but I don't know what to do for him until the vet re-opens on Monday. Thanks for any advice! It's actually kinda hard, since a lot of them look pretty much the same. Some can't even be diagnosed properly w/out some type of skin test being done. I guess just ry to keep it clean, & try to keep him from irritating it, till you go in for proper treatment. Again, it could be anything, but my guess is yours; that it could be hotspots or mange. Thanks! I was thinking of putting some cortisone cream on the spots, but maybe I'll just wait it out and see what the vet says. IP: Logged |

My friends ridgeback had small patches of fur missing on his head. she used baby oil on them once a day and the fur grew back in no time at all.  It might not work for every dog though. IP: Logged |

Jake my lab had horrible problems with hot spots. It starts out liek a small sore that can grow tremdously in size in a matter of a day. They will scratch will make a bloody mess. Jake has never lost his fur though, He has topical prednizone to help and I use the collar to heal. I dont know anything aobut mage, but I would go to the vet to determine what it is. If it is hot spots they are usually recurring and there are things to do with diet etc, to keep them from coming back. I changed Jakes food and it relly helped.
