Hi! This may be a dumb question but here it goes...I was wondering if there was a difference in the material that is in kid stuffed animal toys compared to what's in dog stuffed animal toys? My dogs love to tear the stuffing out the stuffed animals. They go through them so fast that it gets expensive to buy all the time. I have a supply of my son's old stuffed animals and was thinking about giving them to the dogs to have fun with but was worried about the stuffing inside being hazardous to dogs. What do you all know? Can the stuffing in kid's toys be different than what they put in dog toys? Thanks y'all.

ha ha! My dog's sister was given some old stuffed animals, and before they knew it, she had ripped it open and eaten some of the stuffing! They didn't realize it, until later that day they went outside because Snickers was whining and yelping, so they find her, and she has this 2 ft. trail of stuffing coming out of her rear end! You feel sorry for her, but it is so funny! Ok, just sharing that. Well, anyhow, we buy Ranger special stuffed animals from Petsmart that don't have stuffing inside, and they are great! We had to get rid of one because he hate something at his sisters that messed up his stomach and the duck was in his kennel that night...yeah, I think you get the picture. Besides that, they are great! Ranger LOVES his frog (the current victim!) and so far the frog is still in great condition, besides the fact that he no longer has his tag or the little tuft of hair on the top of his head, but they are great! Maybe you should try some of those!

Yeah, I saw those at Petsmart as well. I actually think my two Huskies would totally give me the silent treatment if I bought those stuffingless toys!! LOL. They LOVE to "kill" the toys and have such a blast tearing the stuffing out of them. They don't eat the stuffing but sometimes they just swallow a little.

Tuttifruti, your pups are darling!

As for toys, about 4 years aog I founs somehting called "Bite the man" at restoration Hardware. It was in the shape of a man and amde of fleece. I tried buying something similar at petco and Wylie would have it chewed up in a few days, but this bithe the man lasted forever. I got on their website, and they dont carry it any more but do havethe big red bone. I think it is a quality issue

hereis the big red bone http://www.restorationhardware.com/page.jhtml?navHistory=cat160103%2Bcat210010&type=product&categoryId=cat720011&id=prod1100076

Have you tried the Dr. Noy line of Kong toys? The ones I've seen seem to be designed differently from standard plush toys, so that you could actually replace the stuffing section (like a little pillow) if the dog got through the first layer of fabric. Also, they have replacement squeakers (one or more) if your dogs like to hunt those out.

Regarding the children's toys: I was told to be careful with those because children generally don't rip apart their toys with their teeth, and dog toys are designed with that possibility in mind so they don't have plastic eyes, noses, etc. I don't know if different types of dyes are used, though. Considering that your dogs have the tendency to rip up their plushies that are already designed for dogs, I think I'd be particularly cautious.

Maybe you could give the Kong plush toys a shot and see if they work out?

I worry about the stuffing that Nala pulls out of the doggie toys. It looks all synthetic-y and rough to me. Like something that wouldn't break down very well. I try to not let her have it.

I give my dogs kids toys all the time, but I do have a couple rules I follow. I look for ones without plastic eyes, although one of Witt's favorite toys is Big Bird and they have huge plastic balls for eyes. Since the very first thing he does it take the eyes off I give it to him and wait, as he pulls them off I pick up the pieces and throw them away. He has never tried to eat them he just likes ripping them off. My dogs don't eat the stuffing and I have never had it show up in their poo. I think you have it right KarrieSue...my dogs would think I was cheating them if I gave them toys without stuffing. They sooooo love to "kill" it. I don't pick stuffies with the hairy kind of fur, it's usually long or they use it in tufts for a mane or something...My Poodle used to have one of these and would pull the hair with his teeth, I didn't realize it until it was too late but the hair was getting stuck in his teeth and tartar formed around it, it caused an infection at the gums and he has lost a few teeth. He had bad teeth already...this did not help at all. I also don't like stuffies with felt on them or other attachments. The simpler the better. No beans in them and I prefer the polyesther stuffing to the cotton...easier to clean up. My dogs also have some toys they gut and others they never do...I'm not sure how they establish who is given the death penalty and who lives a whole life, but they must, because with three dogs you would think that one would tear up anothers fave...it doesn't seem to happen. They seem to agree whose is whose and respect it. We do keep the shells of the toys and they still play with them, usually tug of war. There are several arms or legs in the toy box, the bodies have long been thrown out.
We made them toys recently and they are big hits. Heres how: Go to your fabric store and pick out three 1/8 yard wide fleece strips of fabric, we chose brightly colored fabrics and at leaste one of the three had some depth or texture to it(like resembled sheeps wool). Buy a couple tennis balls. Now put all three lengths together and tie a knot at one end braid the three strips a little and then take a tennis ball and string it on one strip, push it up to where the braiding stopped. (of course you cut a small X in on either side of the ball)braid the rest of the way and do the same to the other end, adding a tennis ball and tying a knot. You can place the balls anywhere or just one on the end. You can make these as long or short as you want and if you have smaller dogs make your strips skinnier and shorter. It cost me $2.80 total to make one. My dogs play tug of war with it and they love it when I swing it around, they come running and grab one end, I swing them around off the ground a little. Just like you do with kids. We originally saw these at a flyball tournament, owners were using them to recall their dogs off a run. They were charging $10-14 dollars each. We decided to make our own. I've seen them made with all kinds of materials, leather, genuine fur, denim, faux fur, t-shirt materiel etc. If your dog eats the stuffing or has troubles with stuffie toys try one of these tug toys see how they like it. I'am thinking about making one with a kong toy braided into it since Witt tears the tennis balls up.

PS. if you make one of the toys I described above...make it half the length you actually want because they stretch out alot once the dogs start playing with them. We have one that is like 7 feet long because it was the first we made!
