Hi,

We just got our new 8 year old dog from the shelter. He seems like a very nice dog - and someone must have taught him some tricks because he sits and he shakes a paw.

But now I'm wondering whether the following behavior is a trick or if it is just a strange habit. When you put the leash on the dog and hold the leash up high, he jumps up (all four legs off the ground) and grabs the loop of the leash in his mouth. At first I just thought he was excited about his walk. Now I'm wondering if this is a trick. But it seems like sort of a strange trick.

Any guesses?

Is he well mannered and in control of himself up until the moment you put the leash in the air? How consistent is he is doing it? Does the response seem like it's a routine thing to him? I know several people who think it's cute to teach their dogs to "walk themselves", I personally would have a fit if my dog snatched the leash out of my hand. LOL, thats just me though, I feel like when the leash goes on, it's focus time.

Hi Maisey!

I'm with you. This jumping to get the leash thing drives me crazy. But it is the only time he really moves with any speed (lol). It's interesting to hear that some people encourage their dogs to 'walk themselves'.

He is a very calm dog. He does get very excited about his walks, though. My husband was on his exercise bike in the basement and let the dog out into our little back yard. The dog thought he should be going for a walk and started gently pulling on my husband's pant leg as a hint.

This is the first time I have ever adopted an adult dog. On the plus side - he's house trained and calm. He walks on his leash perfectly and is so happy to be rescued he follows me around the house all day! On the negative side - it's going to take me awhile to figure him out and trust him around the kids. It's frustrating not to know anything at all about his past!

Lucky, It sounds like he is wonderful! I would not get upset about him doing the leash thing..at his age it is obviously a gesture that means something to him and it doesn't sound like he is being disrespectful, just exuberant. It sounds like he has opened his heart to you and your husband and that is not always the case with older rescues, what joy he must feel to be in a forever home. It's different when you get a puppy and can teach them the way you want, but I think in your situation I would probably treat it like discovering a new friendship with an adult, take joy in learning all his little habits and quirks, his favorite spot for a rub or scratch etc. I hope you all bond well and and have fun with the process of doing so.
