Hi, I'm new to this board, but have enjoyed reading it....you also helped me with my dog Casey (the mini dauchsund that's pregnant) She's doing fine by the way...no puppies yet..

Anyway...I would like to know where and what kind of dog food to buy for my two dogs. The shitzu is allergic to soy, and I would like to be able to buy thier food at a store instead of by mail. Do you have any suggestions???? If I have to order it "I will" but I would rather not. Thank you! Susan

P.S. the shitzu scratches alot, Ive tried everything I can think of for bathing...

And yes he has seen a vet, he is allergic to soy, and has sencetive skin "HELP"

Hi, Susan,

I feed my dog Royal Canin which I get from Petco. My Shihpoo does very well on it, she's happy and healthy and not overweight! Plus, she loves the taste whereas she hated Eukanaba and Precise.

Here's the ingredients list for the Mini puppy:
Chicken meal, chicken, corn gluten meal, brewers rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), brown rice, dried egg product, beet pulp, natural chicken flavor, brewer's yeast, salmon oil, potassium chloride, zeolite, rice hulls, chicory extract, salt, choline chloride, salmon meal, dried apples, dried blueberries, taurine, vitamin E supplement, Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation solubles, ascorbic acid, flax seed, marigold extract, monosodium phosphate, folic acid supplement, zinc oxide, iron sulfate, manganese proteinate, biotin, sage, iron proteinate, copper proteinate, calcium pantothenate, tocopherols, dried ginger, garlic, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, vitamin A supplement, rosemary extract, pyroxidine hydrochloride, sodium selenite, niacin supplement, riboflavin supplement, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin B12 supplement, calcium iodate, vitamin D3 supplement.

And for the Mini adult:
Chicken, brewers rice, chicken meal, brown rice, corn gluten meal, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), oatmeal, beet pulp, natural chicken flavor, rice hulls, brewers yeast, salmon oil, canola oil, potassium chloride, salt, calcium carbonate, dried sweet potato, DL methionine, ascorbic acid, dicalcium phosphate, choline chloride, magnesium oxide, dried eggs, salmon meal, vitamin E supplement, dried blueberries, marigold extract, dried spinach, dehydrated alfalfa, zinc proteinate, flax seed, folic acid supplement, zinc oxide, iron sulfate, manganese proteinate, L-carnitine supplement, iron proteinate, biotin, copper, proteinate, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, sage, manganous oxide, vitamin A supplement, rosemary extract, pyridoxine hydrochloride, sodium selenite, niacin supplement, riboflavin supplement, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin B12 supplement, calcium iodate, vitamin D3 supplement.

I skimmed through the lists and don't see any soy! A bag of the puppy formula costs me $7 and I think the adult formula is $7-9.

A lot of people also recommend Innova, but the closest place that sells it is too far away to be convenient for me. Check out the Innova website if you're interested. There's also a page on the site that lets you put in your address and search for retailers near you. Not sure if that has soy in it or not.

Best,
Alison

Susan - welcome, as Newlab said, please check out the "food for thought" thread tons of wonderful advice on food issues and allergies. Interesting your dog is allergic to soy, They say that is a big problem now with humans and it wasnt widely known until Soy became the new designer food in the last few years and everyone wants to use it in some form or another.

Good luck

I found Natural Choice potato and duck that has no wheat soy, diary in it at petco - I believe they also have a Royal canin "sensible choice" lamb and rice also with no wheat, soy, dairy or chicken.

A lot of dogs are allergic to chicken

Thank you all so much! I will check out the thread on food for thought.

p.S. I slso go by susan_cude@hotmail.com
I thought that might have confused some people.

"UPDATE" CASSEY (the mini dauchsund that's pregnant) her milk came in this morning, what I mean is: she had breast before, then all of a sudden, THEY ARE HUGE!! SHE IS NOW EITHER 7 OR 8 WKS. IT IS SO UNFORTUNANT THAT I'M NOT POSSITIVE. BUT I CALCULATED BACK AND THE CLOSEST I CAN COME TOO IS AT LEAST 7 MAYBE 8 WKS. I KNOW SHE'S CLOSE, I GOT A RECTAL THERMOMETER, BUT SHE WON'T LET ME CHECK HER.

I BOUGHT AN OLD CRIB, SAWED OFF THE LEGS AND AM USING THAT FOR HER TO BIRTH IN. MY QUESTION IS: SHOULD THE BED BE FIRM AND NOT SOFT OR WHAT? ONE SIDE COMES DOWN HALF WAY, AND I PUT THE IRONING BOARD AGAINST IT SO SHE COULD GET IN AND OUT OF IT O.K. I JUST KNOW SHE'S GOING TO HAVE THEM TONIGHT. SHE'S VERY TIRED, WALKS IN CIRCLES AND LAYS DOWN. NOT HER SELF TODAY AT ALL. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IN BEHAVIOR? I ASKED THE VET, SHE SAID SHE WILL PROBABLY START LOOKING AROUND FOR A PLACE TO HAVE THEM, LIKE THE CLOSET'S OR SOMETHING.

SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS, BUT ONCE I STARTED I DIDN'T WANT TO GO BACK AND CHANGE IT ALL... LAZY! WHAT CAN I SAY!!!HEHEHE

SINCERELY, SUSAN
