hi! I have a 5 month old britany spaniel, and he likes to chew our furniture. WE now have a hole under the ottoman, the corners of our kithchen chairs are chewed, he tore a hole in the outdoor-lounge-pad, and numerous other things. Any one have any tips on how to get him to stop? Around the house are strewn millions of little chew toys for him! Please help!

You just need to find a chew toy that is more interesting to him than the furniture. Do you have a kong? You can stuff them with all kinds of stuff to make them interesting. Also, if possible keep him busy....teach him to play fetch or something to burn his excess energy. If you tire him out...he may be too exhausted to bother with your furniture. My aussie x was a big chewer too as a puppy...I gave her Nylabone (peanut) edibles and a kong which seemed to grab her interest. Around 6 months of age she was done teething and her chewing needs decreased considerably. Good luck.

Try using something like Bitter Apple where he chews. Also, if you watch him then he can't chew holes in things. Your puppy should never be out of your sight. You should either be in the room with him, have him tetherred to you, or he should be crated. This is the only way to keep him out of trouble!

Yes, we have a Kong, but the treats fall out of it, and he doesn't like teh kind of peanut butter we have. He also 6 tennis balls (somewhere!) 2 frisbees, 2 stuffed animals with squeakers, pb chew toys, basted chicken chew toys, long different flavored sticks, and short flavored sticks. WE do try to watch him, but if you look away for one second, he is into something. He goes on lots of long walks, and plays iwht his sister who is within 5 min. of us, all the time, so he doesn't have much excess energy except in teh morning, so he spends a lot of that time outside. Today - Wed. however, he is trapped inside because we are getting our roof redone. (We live in TX where we had that big hail storm last spring!)Maybe he will see his sister a lot this week...

tuttifruitti- jamiya is right about keeping your dog in sight ALL the time- it is the only way to keep on top of his activity and to monitor behaviors especially at this age. All interaction will be training time and teaching him what to chew and what not to chew is part of the training process. I keep a drawer in my kitchen (on the bottom level) full of dog treats, toys, and special bones. I tied a rope to the handle and taught my aussie to pull it open and she could pick her treat or toy out to have. When I see her heading into my kids rooms coming out with a stuffed animal or toy of theirs I tell her to "leave it" and then say " get your own toys"...that may sound silly, but it works because she drops what she has and suddenly remembers that she has her own special toy box that she can get into. That part of it seems to be very satisfying...getting to open her treat drawer and finding something on her own. I am forever adding to her box with new interesting things for her to discover. I think giving your dog the job of finding his own goodies redirects their attitude and desire to listen in more appropriate ways- tapping into those behaviors can help solve a lot of training issues. I always tell myself to just "think like a dog"!

Max used to chew on our kitchen chairs, in fact he thought he was so sneaky he'd bring one of his toys under the table and chew away and we looked down to say NO! he would start chewing on his toy. Hehe but we just kept saying Max No! and give him one of his toys and he eventually stopped. I've read sometimes if you have TOO many toys out that your dog gets confused as to what is his. Maybe you should pick up a few and put them aside for later. And jemnin what a cute idea! although I'd be afraid Max woudl scarf away at everything that was in there and not just one piece!

newlabowner- I thought the same thing at first- that she will snarff everything in the drawer, but we also taught her names for her toys, and to find certain things which she thinks is a huge game. She has a "woofy" "monkey" "chewy" "beary" "ball" "fluffy" "shoey" and "squeaky" and she knows which is which. Her treats are in ziploc bags and if she wants one she gets the whole bag out and brings it to us. Her bones are all over in the drawer and she seems to have certain moods when she likes certain things, and will rummage through the drawer looking for greenies, or special rawhides. I get a big assortment. If she gets too many things out I do notice that she loses interest in them, so now we are working on putting things away in her drawer for another "job" she can learn. This dog loves to have things to do and when boredom sets in, that is when I find her rummaging through my kids bedrooms for barbie dolls, leggos and my sons footballs, which is her most favorite toy on earth. So, I have to keep things interesting, but this drawer idea has been fun. I do notice that she can open my kids dresser drawers, too- anything with a handle now reveals secret treasures. So, I have to be careful what I teach her.

Hmmm. I have a drawer with Nala's toys and chews in it, where I keep the spare toys and the chews that I dispense when I NEED her to settle down and leave me alone for a little while. I have some toys out and rotate them when she seems to be bored with them. I only give her the "special" chews - like greenies and stuffed bones - when I need a break. I always figured if she has free access to them then they would lose their power to settle her down.

I also toss all the toys that are currently out on the floor into a spare crate (too small for her now), and she can go in and rummage around and choose what she wants.

I wonder if teaching her to open a drawer or a box or something might be more entertaining for her. She does definitely get bored, and that's when she is the worst with the cats or with nipping at me. Of course she also misbehaves when I am in the kitchen and she is gated in the next room over. Sometimes she watches me from the gate, but usually she decides to eat the couch pillows or stand on the card table or molest a cat. Or surf the computer desks for interesting tidbits.

I am not having much luck teaching her names for toys. Here's this dog that I thought was super smart and catches on really fast to obedience commands, and yet I can't teach her BALL?

She's a strange one all right.

Jamiya- your posts crack me up. She sounds like such fireball. Maybe she would like to get into tracking- have you read about that? Might help her learn to stay focused and challenged, who knows.
Seems like I read a while back that you lved in Kansas? We moved to Colorado from KC (Olathe)-
Hang in there with little ole Nala girl-

Yes, we are in KC (Overland Park). Wish you were still here!

She definitely is a fireball. I have to laugh or I would cry.

I need to get off my butt and really work with her on down-stay and maybe it would help with the cats. And I want to start her on some simple agility stuff.

My husband lets her off-leash when he goes with her to the huge park nearby. He goes late at night so there is nobody else there. This park has miles of trails on a ton of land and is very secluded. It made me really nervous when I found out he was doing this, but I went with them last night and she was so good! She runs around sniffing stuff and generally keeping up with us. If she does get too far away all he has to do is whistle and she comes back, and even when she takes off after a deer she comes right back (poor deer).

We occasionally called her to us and told her how good she was and let her go again - reinforcing the Come command.

Jamiya- I cannot believe you live in Overland Park! We are actually coming to KC this weekend to attend a party in Leawood at a good friends house. We loved KC- lived out off 135th and Pflum road and my kids went to Regency Place Elementary- so we were right on the dividing line of Overland Park and Olathe.
I am still trying to figure out how to post pictures- do you have an email address? I would like to send you a picture of Jules- seems like I had your email at one time but I cannot remember it. Mine is Jeminn@aol.com

You sent me a picture of Jules when she was a pup. I would love a more recent one! My e-mail is jamia_w@hotmail.com.

Maybe we can get together this weekend or something? Are you bringing Jules with you? And is she a purebred aussie or a mix?

We would love to live in CO.

Jeminn - here is a copy of a post I posted before please let me know if you have any problems I will certainly help ya with posting pictures:

I've seen a lot of people ask how to post a picture so here you go:
Go to www.photoisland.com (I saw this recommended I think there are other sites out there) you need to upload your picture to a server..

Choose the sign-up free and fill out the membership form. Go to Upload Pictures and use the BROWSE button to browse to where you have the pictures saved on your computer. Choose UPLOAD. On the left side of the screen choose MY ALBUM LIST: Personal (or whatever you named your album) This will display your pictures.. click on one.. Now on the left choose LINK FOR AUCTION.. Copy the URL FOR YOUR PHOTO.

In your thread type "" without the quotation marks

and there you go you have a link to your picture!

Thanks newlabowner- I am going sit down and figure this out, but first I need to take some more recent digital pics of my aussie- she is growing up so fast!
Jamiya- yes Jules is coming along this weekend. We are staying at my friends house in the Regency Place subdivision Sat-Monday (135th and Pflumm..are you familiar with that area? There is a small park on Greenwood right in that neighborhood..between 127th and 135th and Greenwood). We have plans Saturday night and Sunday we will watching the Chiefs game, but if you live close I would love to get together with you and see your little Nala. What park do you go to? I could always get Jules out for an afteroon romp on Sunday. I am going to get this picture thing figured out and see if I can get a couple posted.

Jeminn, they are sooo cute! I have a throw like the one your cat is on and my dog and cat fight over it! The cat always wins though.

haha! The subject of posts sure changes fast! We went from chewing to how to post pics! Well, back to the chewing, my dog knows where most of his toys are (on top of his crate!) and he loves getting them, sometimes he even gets his leash and brings it to me, since I am teh one who usually takes him on a walk. He is getting alot better about the chewing already, sicne we started puting the toys on teh crate, I guess it is like the drawer, it keeps him entertained because he has a BIG crate and a lot of stuff to get through before getting to the toys! Thanks for all your help, now back to postin pics...

Jules looks quite a bit bigger than Nala. Is Jules a purebred aussie?

I'll mail you about this weekend.
