We recently added a new member to our family, his name is Ceasar and he is an adorable JRT. At the vet check I was told that he may have problems with ultraviolet light because he has no pigment in his eyelids or around his eyes. He suggested possibly getting Ceasar's eyelids tattooed black. Has anyone ever heard of this or had it done? Any advise would be helpful. Thanks  IP: Logged |

I have heard of it, more with horses than dogs though. When all they have is pink pigment around their eyes it becomes sunburned easily and they have nothing to reflect the light away from the eye. You can't get sunblock that close to the eye rim to protect them either. Tatooing black around the eyelid like eyeliner is one option. But I have another idea for you to try. Doggles...I bought each of my dogs a pair because we do flyball with them and many other outdoor activities. We also travel with them in the back of my truck, using wire crates or the safe cable system and harnesses of course. Wearing the Doggles prevents debris from causing injury to their eyes, provides complete UV protection and lots of people get a big smile when they see them! I paid less for mine at a local pet supply shop then they are on the web site and I am thrilled with them. My 11 month old pup Witt will wear them anytime without complaint, our almost 3 year old Aussie X will wear them when on a leash or riding in a vehicle, but doesn't leave them on if left to his own decision making. They fit very nicely and have tons of "cool" factor.
