Our lab/cocker mix has just been infected with fleas for the first time since we've had him. He's 4 and we got him about 2 years ago. We're going to shampoo him with a flea killer, throw out his bedding and replace it with new stuff, and get some carpet/furniture treatment. We're expecting our first child in 3 months and were wondering whether Frontline on our dog will have any adverse effects on our baby? Are there other products out there that are baby safe?

Thanks a bunch,
Steve

Hi Steve, Welcome to the board and congratulations on your upcoming new arrival.
I have two daughters 11 and 15 and I also have three dogs, each of them has been on either Advantage or more recently Frontline Plus. When the girls were little we just watched them like hawks until the fluid had soaked in, not allowing them to touch the dog in the spot where it was placed. They obviously are older now and know not to get it on their hands. It soaks in pretty fast.

When your baby arrives I would be careful about laying him/her on the floor for a while after cleaning the carpet or treating it, same with the furniture. Read the labels to make sure those products are safe. Same when the baby starts crawling around, they spend alot of time on the floor then.
I have found with my dogs that shampooing them with regular shampoo and leaving it on them all suddsed up for like 5 minutes will kill the fleas that are on them, rinse well and dry, then apply the frontline.
On the lighter side...may I recommend that you go take a nap? You will need all the sleep you can get!

I think the best time to apply it is right before bedtime. This way it is almost soaked in by morning and the dog does not have the chance to roll it into the carpet or anything. I've gotten advantage on my hands accidently and I'm f f fine. Fine. Just wash hands very well.
