I adopted my dog 3 years ago from a shelter, and have giving her a great home life. She is a beautiful tri colored beagle who is missing her left back leg. When I first got her, you could tell that she was beaten, always walking really low and if you called her she would crawl up to you. Well she has totally grown out of that stage. She is a happy little girl now! My question is, Every place I have every lived has been an upstair apartment. The first few times she walks up the step she is very hesitant, and it usually takes her a few tries. But after she gets the hang of the new steps shes fine. The problem is sometimes she will fall while walking up the steps. Once she has fallen she will not attempt to walk up the steps again. I dont know if shes scared that she might fall again or what. I want to know if you have any hints on how I can break her of that, like maybe give her some more confidence in herself or something. It breaks my heart to see her like that!!

What if you used a harness instead of a collar and only let her go up or down the stairs while on a leash. This way when she starts to falter you can lift her, keeping her from falling. I don't mean lift her up completely...just enough to keep her from falling and giving her time to reset her feet. Perhaps with assistence all the time she would gain confidence when using the stairs.
