Help! My Shih-Tzu (Mylo) refuses to walk with a lease on. He will lay down on the ground and won't budge. As soon as you take it off he jumps up and starts walking. He does great on walks, he stays right next to me but I think that might be dangerous as he gets older. Any suggestions?

Try putting a harness on him, maybe having the leash come from a different angle will work. And yes you are right, it is the safest thing for your dog and anyone elses to have him on leash. If your dog were to dart out after another dog, beside the possiblity of getting hit by a car. If it were to approach another dog even though it may be friendly the other dog may just take offense to it. Plus it scares the wits out of us people walking down the street seeing some unknow dog running towards us. We don't know if he is friendly or not. Its better to be safe.

have you ever tried tying up this dog for a few mins each day or a few min. a few times a day if your around? thats how we leash train our dogs..then you dont have to go thru all the other difficulties of leash training them...doesnt work on all dogs but works on most.

My puppy turned 3 months old on the 15th. I have tried to tie him up once but he thought he was a toy and chewed the crap out of the lease, I had to get a new one. I will try the harness idea. I think my biggest problem is because he is a baby he wants to chew on it (along with everything else in the house)! :0)

Try associating the leash and walks with good things. Give him lots of love and attention and use treats. You can lure him out on a walk with treats. I find if I have any difficulty with my dogs doing something that they will do just about ANYTHING for treats. Good luck! I think it is that stubborn puppy stage and things will ease up as he gets older.

This sounds like pretty normal puppy stuff. Definitely try the lure him with food thing. You can walk backwards and clap your hands and say things in an excited voice and lure him with food - the neighbors will probably call the cops, but hey it works.

We didn't want to lure our puppy, so we carried him half way, and then made him walk/run back. That worked really well too, since he is such a chicken. When we got back he got several ice cubes (his favorite summer treats!). He quickly learned that the leash and walks were good things!

At 3 months this seems just like puppy behavoir. Puppies this young aren't usually enthusiastic about going for walks and really shouldn't be going for very long walks at all anyways. What tutti suggested is what our trainer said in class. Have someone drive you a few houses up or carry yoru pup a few houses up and then have them walk going back. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this time. I was really upset when Max did this because I really wanted a dog to take walks with and I thought this meant he would never want to. Just keep the leash on as much as possible and maybe try bitter apple to prevent him/her from chewing on it.

GOOD LUCK!

I had the same fear about Nala not liking walks. While she does do better now, we can't ever just walk. Her nose is always leading her to weave back and forth in front of me (or behind me) and she is constantly stopping to sniff things. It's hard not to trip over her or step on her feet, and when she suddenly stops to sniff something it takes some coaxing or muscle to get her moving again.

I am teaching her "slow" to get her to stop pulling for the times when she is actually out in front of me, but does anyone with a hound (or other big sniffer) have any tips for keeping her moving?!

I know how to teach her to heel and I will eventually do that, but I don't want her to heel for entire walks. I just want her to walk and not have her nose in every bush we pass!
