Hi, I am looking for advice on what type of dog would be best suited for kids. My Daughter has been asking me for a pet for a long time now and I have finally decided to get her one for Christmas. My daughter is 5 years old.

Any dog but mine! Wait, no...

Seriously, though. A few questions first.

What are you looking for in a dog? Small or large? Do you mind dealing with grooming issues or would you prefer a short-haired dog? Would this dog be primarily a companion for your daughter, or would you or your spouse or another child also want the dog to do certain things? If so, what? Does anyone have allergies? Is there anyone home during the day? Are you thinking puppy or adult dog? Are there any plans for a new baby in the next few years? Do you have other pets?

What does your daughter think of when she thinks "dog"? Why does she want one? Because they are cute? To take on walks? To play fetch? To cuddle with in front of the TV? Is there a friend's dog that has prompted her to want one? And if so, what kind?

Please try to answer as many of these questions as you can and it will be much easier to point you toward some breeds to check out. Obviously, you want a dog that is gentle with kids - that question is already answered.

I would like a Puppie, a small dog. I don't mind grooming, the dog will be a companion for my dauther and the family. I have a two year old son too. There is no one in the home during the day. None of us have alergies. My daughter wants a dog to cuddle and walk around our neiborhood. My daughter has a friend that has a terrier and she loves that dog. But I hear that terrier are not good with kids.

This is a good link for learning about dog breeds, you can even fill out a questionairre and it will give you a list of suggestions.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/
click on "breed selector" for the questionairre.

I think some of these breeds might be ones to look at:
Pug - I have not met one yet who isn't crazy about kids!}

Australian Terrier
Bichon Frise
Chinese Crested (hairless)
Dandie Dinmont Terrier
Dutch Smoushond
English Toy Spaniel
Havanese
Kemmer Feist
Miniature Schnauzer Mountain Feist
Rat Terrier
Schipperke
Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie)
Poodle
Cocker Spaniel
Boston Terrier

I personally don't think terriers are bad with kids, but they aren't for everyone. Just research alot until you find something that seems to be a match. Every dog is different even within it's own breed. Have the whole family take part in looking at pictures of breeds on the computer, make it a fun educational process.

I second the Bichon Frize! Some of our friends have one and she is great with kids, and it won't affect your allergies!

What about a Shih Tzu or Pomeranian? Maltese?
