Thanks for the refresher thread on foods, Maisey. If I decide to switch foods, what is the best way to do it? What proportion do you mix with the old food, and for how long? Also - and I know this sounds terrible - I am very concerned that if I switch Nala from Science Diet to something like Canidae (how do you pronounce that anyway?) or Innova and she has MORE energy like everyone says happens with a better food....I may just have to commit myself and THEN where would she be?

Jimiya - I posted that my Jake my lab gained a lot more energy after being put on Innova, but he was so lethargic before and having problems with his diet to begin with, I think Nayla who is already healthy, shouldnt get more energy. I Think Jakes energy level is now where it should be, so I wouldnt be frightened on these foods. Honeybear IP: Logged |

I wasn't going to switch, but she is not really eating her food very well the past few days. Sometimes she eats, and sometimes she doesn't. She was VERY good this morning which was sooooo nice.....but then I worried that there was something wrong! But she still loves walks and playing with her ball and my husband takes her to the park. Yesterday she ran around like a maniac in a shallow stream and had a blast. Even on the days where she hasn't eaten a whole lot she has still been very active and a maniac at times (as usual). He also took her for a walk late last night, so maybe that is why she was so calm this morning. Her crate pad had not been rearranged and chewed on and she was not awake until my alarm went off, so I can tell she slept like a rock. (Why can't she do that on weekends?!)

Jimaya, When I switch I start by adding just a 1/4 new food for a couple days, then half and half for about a week. My dogs don't seem to be very sensitive to switching, you might have to slow down a bit for yours and someone else may have a different way to suggest. I generally do this when the current food is about half gone, then after the week of half and half I can dump the new bag into the old and it becomes the majority kibble. I think honeybear is right about the energy thing, when I said it ...I don't quite know how to explain what I meant but I'll try... When I eat food at Burger King, although it's great when I am eating it, it usually makes me feel kind of "bogged down", like it comes back to haunt me, but if I eat a healthy meal I almost always feel like going for a walk after dinner, I'm not hyper, I just feel good, kinda "bright eyed and bushy tailed" LOL. However, let me drink coffee and you will see a hyper girl! Anyhow I really think you will like what you see, I don't think she will suddenly climb up and sit upon your head, if she does...send her my way, she can burn it off wrestling with my boys. I'm not sure I am pronouncing it right, but nobody has ever corrected me... Can eh day. IP: Logged |

LOL! Climb up and sit on my head! I think she has tried that before... Okay, you have convinced me. I will give it a try. I may run it by my vet and see what they think....but I am not sure I am pleased with them and if they answer "wrong" it may be the final straw. I know what you mean about feeling good. I have a terrible sweet tooth and tend to eat very poorly and way too much. I wanted to drop about 15 pounds, so I started on the weight watchers flex point diet, where you can eat anything you want as long as you stay within a certian point range. Since I started on it, I have not had to struggle even once to stay awake at work. I am also walking a few miles a day (with Nala, naturally) and usually I have the energy to do this right after walking in the door from work, which is unusual for me. Of course, I am also ravenously hungry a lot of the time, but that's to be expected while trying to adjust to a "normal" portion of food instead of the giant ones I was eating. Thanks for the advice! Now I just have to drive across town to find this food. Oh, and I doubt her tummy will have any problems switching. This dog can eat just about anything with no adverse effects. She would probably eat one of my children if I didn't watch her.

Jamiya, sometimes I think we are the same person lol! I switched Max to Innova and thought the same thing, my goodness I really hope this doesn't give him MORE energy! He seems like the same dog to me, but it has only been about a week on the Innova. We had just a little bit of food left on the bottom of the pail, I just added some Innova to that till it seemed like half and half and fed it to him that way. Although I dont' think Max is very sensitive to switching foods and once he smelled the Innova he started doing loops around the Family Room and jumping up and down. IP: Logged |

I went home and looked at the food tub and thought, "Oh yeah. I decided to get a 40-lb bag last time." :/ The first time I bought food I only got 20 pounds thinking we might switch her or something. Then I decided "Bah!" and went for the big bag the next time. We have a TON left. I really don't like her ignoring her food, though, so I think I will at least get a small amount of Innova and/or Canidae and see how she likes it.

Jamiya, you can donate the left over food to a shelter or rescue place so it doesnt go to waste. I am in the same boat, I am switching Jake of the innova because I think he may allergic to the chicken - hey I could send it to you! Honeybear IP: Logged |
