We've had Ellie for not even a month yet. She's caught on to her name, "NO", and other simple commands, however, we're having a heck of a time getting her to go potty outside. Any tips for potty training my hyper dog?? We were warned when we got her that she might be hard to potty train but we had no idea it would be this difficult. Please help! IP: Logged |

Are you using a crate for your dog? Crate-training a puppy or dog is the easiet way to housetrain. A dog will not mess in it's sleeping space. The crate should be big enough so the dog has enough room to stand up, turn around and lay down. If you dog is still a puppy, they can't go for more then 2-4 hours without needing to go out. So, midnight potty trips may be necessary. Also, if you work you might want to try and come home to let the dog out...or have a friend or relative do it. Jodi IP: Logged |

I agree with Jodi on using a crate. Some other tips: Take her outside often (especially after playing, sleeping, eating and drinking) using a phrase like "gotta go out?"and stay outside with her until you see her go...the second she is done praise her and give her a treat. Keep your eyes on her *at all times* while she has free roam of the house so you can watch for signals (sniffing, circling, squatting) that she may have to go and you can quickly get her outside in time to prevent any accidents. Do not punish her for accidents unless you catch her in the act. You must be consistent and patient and she will eventually get the idea. Good luck. IP: Logged |

We have been doing the kennel thing while we're not at home and like you say, it works great. She will not go in the kennel and she can't wait to get outside when we come home. But the problem arises when we are there and she won't let us know when she needs to go out. We take her outside about every 90 minutes, but sometimes she just thinks it's playtime when we go out and then as soon as we come back in she goes on the floor. We've stood outside with her as long as 15 minutes! And then, last night, it was raining, the first rain since we've had her, and she absolutely would not go out in the rain. I had to keep picking her up and putting her back in the grass. I'm sorry for the long post but I'm at witts end trying to stop all of this. PLEASE HELP!! IP: Logged |

First, I would associate a word with going potty. Always go out with her. Tell her "Go Potty" or "Hurry Up" or whatever words you want to use. When she goes, AS she is going, say "Good Potty" or "Good Hurry Up" - you get the picture. Don't say it TOO excited or you will interrupt her. But make sure you praise her WHILE she is in the act of going. If you stand out there for 15 minutes (I would only wait 5-10 minutes at most) and she is just fooling around, I would bring her in and immediately put her in her crate. Wait about 15 minutes or so and take her back outside. Repeat until she goes. Hopefully she will get the idea that if she wants some freedom, she needs to go outside first. With my puppy, I also tried to not bring her in immediately after she went. I didn't want her to think that peeing meant she had to go back inside. I never read to do that, but it just made sense to me. I encouraged her to pee right away by asking her "Do you have to go potty?" and praising her when she goes "Good potty!" and then let her play for a little bit before bringing her back in. Even a minute is enough for the dog to lose the association between peeing and going back inside. Hope this helps, and let us know if it doesn't and we will try to help more!

The phrase thing works. Rudy knows "Go Potty" when we take him out. And, when your pup does go on command...praise, praise, praise!!!!!! If you are in your house and your pup begins to piddle on the floor and you see him...quickly snatch him up, take him outside and say "Go Potty" when you get outside...or whatever phrase you want to use. I was amazed at how quickly Rudy caught on. Just when I didn't think it would ever click in his little head...one day he went to the door and sat there staring at it. I took him out..he peed right away...I praised him a ton and he's done it ever since. I still continue to praise him each time. He has had accidents. When he gets overly excited in play he's like a little kid. It's like he forgets to go, then can't hold it and has an accident. Consistancy works...and praise, praise, praise, praise.....
