We have a female cocker who is 13 years old. She has continually used our dining room carpet to eliminate herself. We are putting in hardwood floors starting today and I'm so afaid she will ruin the new Brazilian Cherry. What do I do. When we tore back the carpet you could see stains in a 6' path and most went all the way through to the concrete. I used Oxiclean on those stains and bleach. I'm sure the installer will have to use a float material and also glue so will that cover up any odors that may still be there? Will she go on the wood. She hasn't gone on the tile floor since we had that put in the kitchen. But we do have area rugs on the tile and will have large rugs on wood in dining and family room. Will she go on these? Would the training pad by the back door help? She seems to only do this at night or while we are gone OR if we just don't let her out when she goes to the door (which she wants to go outside all the time). Also, I'm thinking of cutting off all food and water at 4:00 p.m. Would that help?

I just read an article this week-end that older dogs start to urinate more freqently and then have problems making it outside in time. I think 4:00 for water may be too soon for cut off, but a few hours before bed should be okay. and you may just have to get up more frequently at night too. As for cleaning withi Oxiclean, you need ot get somthing else to neutrilize the urine so yourdog wont back to the sam place. Pet stores carry several brands

Natures Miracle...it is wonderful stuff. You have to get rid of the smell permanently not just cover it up. Ask your floor guy to seal the floor before laying the new one. If you have a fenced yard, you might consider a doggy door so she can get out on her own to go. I don't agree with these for the most part, but the pee pads you can buy for dogs may be a last resort solution to save your floor.
