hello! I'm feeling very sad for the last year or so. I'm not a young person, and I've had pets all of my life - small dogs and cats, turtles, hamsters, gerbils, a rabbit for awhile. For 10 years, until last year, I had two beautiful cats who I treated like my children. They were so important to me and so sweet. Then something extremely upsetting happened--I started having a strong allergic reaction in my house and I could hardly stand to be in it any more. Long long story, but the end result was that I had my older cat Max (who was 14) put to sleep as he had some serious health concerns, and I gave my younger cat Mitts to a good friend.

So for almost a year I haven't had a pet. I'm still grieving for Max and am so sad that I had to send Mitts away, even if she is being spoiled rotten. I miss her and when I visit her at my friend's place it upsets me - although I don't let my friend know.

I've had several types of allergy testing and nothing shows up. The specialist said I'm allergic to nothing. I'm completely baffled.

It would be so wonderful if I could have a pet again and sometimes I think I'd like a smaller type of dog that doesn't shed. I've had poodles in the past and they were great, but did have some health concerns. I've read that cockapoos (cocker/poodle cross) are very hardy, being a hybrid, and I think they're adorable. I'd love to get one but I'm afraid I may have to give it up due to health problems.

I'm confused. If anybody cares to respond to this rambling message with any kind of suggestion, I'd appreciate it very much.

Well maybe you could seek out a home near you that does rescue and ask them if you could do some volunteer work for them, that way you would get to be around animals. Ask them if they know of any cocker-poo mixes that you could visit and see if you have a reaction. We had a black cocker-poo when I was a kid. He was the greatest of all the dogs I had then. Now its my poodle Sasha. There are allergy meds these days that you can take also. Ask your doctor about them. It is not fair to go thru life by yourself. You need another little buddy.

Hi, This is just a suggestion have you thought about having a bird of some sort i have parakeets and cockatiels and they can be just as loving as a cat or dog. I also agree with, Puttin510 helping at an animal shelter or somewhere like that..

Also i would like to say i am sorry for your loss

Thanks for the messages, Puttin and Mike. It's nice of you to take the time and I appreciate your suggestions. Actually I've been looking at birds in the pet store! I've never had a bird but I'm really attracted to them. Not too long ago I was holding a gray parrot...which proceeded to bite my finger and not let go!!! *LOL*
I'll look into the idea of volunteering for a pet rescue group. My problem is that I work full time and don't have much time or energy for anything else, but I'll see what I can come up with.
Puttin, what really has me baffled is that the doctors say I'm not allergic to anything...so I'm not getting any help from them. The over-the-counter allergy meds I've taken didn't have any effect on the reaction I was getting either. Very weird. By the way, the picture of your dogs is great...what cute little guys! I used to have black poodles called Sammy and Mandy, and a white poodle - Mandy's mother - was Buffy. I also had a pomeranian, Penny.
Thanks again, guys!

What kind of symptoms did you have? Did you try the newer over the counter drugs like Claritin (that used to be only prescription). What about that Febreze allergy stuff?

It's hard to try and figure out what might help without an animal to experiment with!

The suggestion about exposing yourself to the animal first was a good one. Find a cockapoo breeder and go spend some time in the house and see how it goes.

I think a bird would be awesome. There was the best little conure at the pet store that was so sweet! There are many kinds of conures, but this one wasn't going to get very big (the big parrots scare me). Some people say they are noisy and a one-person bird, but this one was not. I think like everything else you have to shop around to find the right one. I have also heard cockatoos (or was it cockatiels) are really nice birds.

Someday, if I ever don't have cats, I think I will get a bird and a bunny. Or maybe I will get a kitten, a bird, and a baby bunny all at the same time!
