I've had my 16 week old Pekingese puppy for about a week and a half now. She is a total sweetheart -- very mellow and attached to me.. However, just today she started growling and snarling at me while I was holding her.. for no reason apparently. It's happened twice today now and I have no idea what's wrong. I was told she had an umbilical and bilateral inguinal hernias when she was born but that they were fixed... but could it be causing her pain when I pick her up? and that's why she's snarling at me? I got a pekingese because I was told by many that they are so mellow... if anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it. IP: Logged |

Were you just holding her, or were you picking her up when it happened? Perhaps a trip to the vet to rule out any problems might be in order? Hopefully someone else will step forward with some more useful advice.

My Peke is quite mellow and sweet, but different dogs of course have different personalities. Still, if she was fine until recently and a problem suddenly cropped up, I would agree with Jamiya's suggestion of a visit to the vet to rule out a medical reason (especially since she's had prior problems). Pekes are suseptible to spinal problems also (though she's extremely young for that), and this can cause a lot of discomfort if you're holding/picking her up. Perhaps you could also check her feet for ingrown nails that might be causing discomfort? IP: Logged |
