The following is purely anecdotal. It may be of interest to some, but your results will definitely vary.

I have a 5-month-old Australian Shepherd, and have been on a quest for the best pre-prepared dog food (kibble) for him. Here are the results, in this order:

-- Innova Puppy: He sort of liked it (i.e., ate it, but didn't go mad for each meal); resulted in loose poops and lots of gas

-- Canidae: Liked it more than Innova; solid poops, but voluminous and frequent (6 times a day!)

Wellness: Turned his nose up at it, and was perfectly willing to skip a meal altogether rather than eat it; solid poops, less frequent than on Canidae but just as voluminous

Pinnacle: Loves this, goes nuts at each feeding, practically inhales his one morning cup and one evening cup; solid, low-volume poops, twice a day. This one's the keeper.

Sorry for the emphasis on poop results, but that's a pretty good indicator of a food's "efficiency." Luckily for me, all these are available locally.

Again, purely anecdotal, but it may help someone.

thanks for all of the input and letting your pup choose his food. My lab is on innova and really likes it. As for poops, it does make a lot, but he is so much healthier than being on the old commercial food. I will keep pinnacle in mind when he tires of the Innova.

Thanks for sharing Philip!
I will share my experiences as well with the various foods that I've tried on my 3yr old Aussie x over the last few years:

*Nutro Max
- she loved it, had a nice shiny coat but also had a bit of dandriff
-medium sized, firm poops about 3 times per day

*Innova
- she loved it, had the shiniest coat ever (out of most other foods I've used)
- small, softer(but not mushy) stools about
1 - 2 times per day

*Wellness
- she inhaled it, had an extremely soft coat but not as much shine and lost the excess weight she had gained from Innova yet was still able to eat enough to satisfy her
- larger, firm stools about 3 times per day

*Pinnacle
- she ate it but waited until she was really hungry and did not seem thrilled, coat was soft, shiny and she maintained her weight well
- small, firm poops about 2 times per day

*Timberwolf Organics
- she inhales it and licks the bowl clean when its gone, coat is very soft and just about as shiny as it was on Innova....maintains her weight well
- small, firm but not hard stools about 1 - 2 times per day

This is a cool layout style!

Here's our experiances w/ puppy to 'adult' dog food. All being kibble.
I'm speaking for an American Bulldog & a Chinese Shar Pei...

Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy: Am.Bull - Loved it, but really did'nt know about love yet. This was the 1st dog food he ate ever. Poops moderate, as well as coat health.
Overall: Alright for commercial foods, but i would'nt recommend it.

Science Diet Puppy: Am.Bull - Liked it, but gave him constipation/gas, and loose stools. There were noticably undigested corn fragments. No weight gain, at all.
Overall: I definatly would not recommend it.

Innova Puppy: Am.Bull - Tried it, he liked it, but not for too long. Improved coat shine a little. A little weight gain. But still loose stools. But this was probably due to worms. Switched foods before i could really tell if it was the food or not. I blame the worms.
Overall: I recommend it. Quality processing & ingredients.

Nutro Natural Choice Large Nreed Puppy: Am.Bull - I tried to go the "human-grade" route starting w/ Innova Puppy, but like i mentioned my dog was still getting loose poops, which i could'nt quite figure out the cause. At this time. So that's why i went w/ the good ol' Nutro Natural Choice. My Boxer did well on it (adult & senior formula) & lived well passed his life expectancy. He passed away at 14 years. I miss him, he was my 1st ... Moving right along, my Am.Bull loved it, sadly to say but if i remember right, even more than Innova. But then again, he was still figuring out this whole love thing. For some reason i don't really remember his stool or coat situation. Overall i'd say he was doing fine. But i was on a mission for outstanding quality...

Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy: Am.Bull & Pei -- This is the 1st kibble i fed my Pei. He refused to eat Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy. They loved it, for quite some time too. Gained weight. Dull dry coats. Always constipated & gas. Majority loose stools, never fully solid.
Overall: I would'nt recommend it. Quality does'nt add up to it's hype.

Wellnes Super5Mix Puppy: Am.Bull & Pei -- They loved it, for a good amount of time. Literally instant shine & a BiG improvement in skin & coat health. Good weight gain. Majority solid stools. Good overall health improvement.
Overall: I'd defiantly recommend it. Anything from Wellness, not Old Mother Hubbard, 'Wellness'.

Canidae All Life Stages: Am.Bull & Pei -- They could'nt wait for me to make the full transition. They loved it. I'm sure they'd still be loving it too, if i was still feeding it. Solid stools. Slight weight gain, but good weight maintenance. Slight constipation & gas. Coats a little duller than Wellness, but better than Pukanuba.
Overall: i'd recommend it. Quality ingredients at a good price.

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul Adult Dog Food: Am.Bull & Pei -- This is what their currently eating, & they love it. Their coats as shiny & soft as Wellness. Healthy stools. Good overall health.
Overall: i'd definatly recommend it. Again, quality ingredients at a good price.

These are 'our' experiances w/ these certain foods. What's good for 1, might not be good for another.

We're definatly favoring the so-called "human-grade" type dog kibbles.
I've definatly seen better improvement in a number of ways from feeding these "human-grade" types, than from feeding the so-called commercial types. Seeing is not necessarily believing, but it's usually better than reading. LOL.

My plan on feeding these GoodboysBaddogs w/ kibble food works on a rotation diet. Toward the end (finishing off) of the 3rd bag of every companies largest kibble bag, i start the switching/rotaion to the next brand.

These are my current choices in a favored order (for my adult dogs):
Wellness Lamb (& whole line of treats)
Chicken Soup Adult (can't wait for their line of treats)
Innova Dog (& treats)
Canidae All Life Stages (& treats)
Natural Balance Ultra Premium (& treats)

I just recently looked into a company called Nature's Variety. This companies GOOD. I don't know their prices yet, but i'm betting it's pricey! Anybody know of this company or possibly feed it?

Ya know Goodboy-- I never got your email.. AND I HAVE BEEN CHECKING!! Thought you were being stuck up lol.. How is that Chicken Soup For The Soul food that (I think!) you tried? My dogs are strange. They eat at my grandmother's, they devour her dogs food all the time and the food they have liked best of all the store bought stuff anyhow, is weight management Beneful.. That even make sense?? They are both five months old and very healthy, active pups but prefer weight management food... Not right.. but funny. I try to not let them get any of it.. Will wait a bit and see if Jas responds to this, otherwise I will ask him and see if he does know anythign about BARF diets. I am just concerned with the raw meat deal..
Angie- you can call me whatever you like!! (As long as you never call me wrong!!) LOL--
To make sure you got the right addy.. APBT_Forever@hotmail.com<<<< Just like that!

I've tried some samples of the NV beef and chicken kibble on my Aussie X and she seemed to like it....its the tiniest kibble I've ever seen. I bought the canned NV a few times and both of my dogs liked it and I also gave Natalie one of their frozen raw beef patties to try which she absolutely went nuts over. A 15 lb. bag of the kibble runs about $20.00 here.

Mann!
I've tried soooo many times to edit my 1st post here to make it so freash & so clean (LOL!), and after all the work it always replies w/ 'website can't be found'.
Mann, it's frustrating when your a 'Smilies' junkie!!

hey Nern,
Thanks for your info... That price sounds about the same as here. I don't know NV's prices exactly yet, but i was assumming that it was going to be a little more pricier than Wellness Super5Mix 'Puppy'. I said 'Puppy' because usually their and in general puppy formulas are more pricier.
I'm guessing if they make a 30lbs. bag it would be around $37.99 or $38.99
That's a little steep for us.
Who knows tho, i'll probably have a bag sooner than later... lol.
All their food line products sounds like some good stuff. I'm going to try to find a local retailer. Thanks again.

Thank you all so much for posting your experiences with the different foods. I found it very helpful! I have learned so much about dog food in the last few months - I actually thought Science Diet was a good one before! I have been using up all the old food in the process of switching over to Innova. My dogs like it, but I think there might be an issue with constipation when they eat this, and the calories are so high. Reading the information posted above sent me researching "Chicken Soup" dog food. It sounds wonderful - very much like Innova, but without all the calories. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a distributor within 10 miles of my home. But I will! Again, thanks so much for sharing your experiences - it really helps others to make informed decisions.

I only have experience with one food so far, but that is about to change. I have a 4 month old Lab, and the breeder from which I acquired him recomended Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy. From what I am seeing in earlier posts, there are much better foods for controling pooping predictability, so to speak!

With the Eukanuba he is pooping 6-8 times a day, with (mostly small not very solid). He loves the food, and gets all excited when I bring it out. Today I am going to start start some new food. Probably wellness, and then others. I am going to try each food for one week. Is this enough time for each food?

Thanks again for all the great posts, this is giving me great information.

6ft3, I dont think I would go the 1 week route. That is not good for their diegestive systems to keep changing the food. I would recommend geting samples of what you want to try and let him decide by doing a taste test, put all down at same time, if he likes them all, then go with your judgement to see which one he likes best and then choose that one as your food.
Good luck! My lab is on Innova and he is doing great with it.
Some of these foods are hard to find so you can go to their we-site and many show where they are being sold. I buy Innova at the feed store.
Good luck,
Honeybear

OKay-- I don't want any one thinking I am a dead beat and all but I am in the process of moving, working and being a student, moving, two dogs and single to do it all myself is a hard thing. I am at the point that sometimes I am flat damn broke and can't do a thing but cry. I hate the feeling of having NO MONEY at all.. thanks go d I just wait a couple days and get another check.. Anyhow- I haven't been able to keep up with high priced diets for the dogs and I feel like I am denying them their health. However, I have done what I could with giving them, Beneful. It is a cheap, store bought (K Mart, Walmart, grocery store) food. The vet did say she has had tremendous results of this food when I asked her about it. Anyone have any advice or anything I should know about this food.?? Also, my dogs have really soft, mushy stools.. It has a stickish looking slime to it but the odor is not as bad as it was. I(I know I know it is gross, try cleaning it) They could not hold it and went right nuts poodying the place under last night. Anyhow-- is it normal for this to happen. They also had shots yesterday and just started this food yesterday as well.. should I not worry and give it a week or two to allow their bodies to adjust to it..?

Angie, their digesive systems will take time to get used to the new food. If after a few weeks this is still happening - I would switch food.

Angie - did you switch from their previous brand to the current brand gradually? If not, this might be why the poops are mushy. I agree with Honeybear on switching brands if this is still going on in a few weeks.

6FT3: Rapidly switching brands can cause digestive upsets...switching brands each weeks sounds like a real bad idea to me. When switching brands you should do so gradually over about a week or two mixing old food with the new.

Nern-- That is exactly what I done.. Just waited til their feeding time and gave them the new stuff.. will mix it together with their old stuff.. They get 2 1/2 cups in the morning and 1 cup at evening/supper time. They usually do not eat more than that.. Should I up the amount where they are getting bigger and all? How should I mix it? Sorry to ask so many questions.. lol

Angie: How old are your dogs?
If you still have old food left that your going to start mixing in I would mix it half new and half old food for about a week and see if there is any improvement in the stools. Then decrease to 25% old food mixed with 75% new food for about another week and then to all new food.
