My Springer spaniel justgave birth to 5 pups late yesterday. It seems as soon as they start to nurse she nudges them off. How often and how long should the nurse? IP: Logged |

I would call the vet ASAP. I think they should be feeding every few hours. The vet can help yo with how much they should be getting and if not, then what to do Honeybear IP: Logged |

I called the vet today and they suggested getting puppy formula and feeding them that. I'm going right after work to get some. I hope there are some instructions as to how much(quantity). IP: Logged |

Lisa, I would call the vet back, and ask them.they should be the ones saying how much to feed and how often. Acutlayy they should be showing you how to do this. I had to do this to a kitten once. It was a lot of work! I had to feed it every 2-3 hours. Cant remember how many days this lasted, She came to work with me because she needed to be fed so often. I cant stree the importance enough to get the proper feeding schedule and amount and most importantly how to do it. PLease see the vet to show you how to give the food, if it is not done right it can be deadly. and here is an something that may help you to get mom to nurse Always be with them when the Mom is in the box. Help lay her down and bring the puppies to the mothers nipples, squeeze each nipple slightly to get a drop or two of milk out and rub the nose/mouth of the puppy to it and assist in getting him latched on. Make sure the head is always elevated slightly to avoid the milk flushing back out the nose or mouth. Use a small towel propped under the puppy to do this. When finished make sure the mother "POOPS" the puppies by placing there rear end to her mouth and she should lick them until they eliminate. Clean well and return to warm box and remove mother from box area. If hand raising put a small dab of Vaseline on your finger and rub the genitals of the puppies until they eliminate. Don't rub real hard, kind of about the same pressure as you would use to rub your own eye. Clean the puppies well. Good luck and keep us posted IP: Logged |

Okay dear.. I had the same issue with my lab a few years ago.. She didn't know what they were doing and was scared of them because it was her first litter. However, I sat with her and pet her and put one puppy on a breast while petting and talking to the momma telling her it was okay and see they are only hungry.. you are their mama.. and talking to her helped her.. then she sniffed the babies and everythign was fine from there. I would put one more every now and then. She then understood what they were doing. Get the puppy formula just the same. Feed every two hours to start off.. Is the mother cleaning them anyhow?? If not, you will have to get a warm wet rag and rub their bottoms to make them go.. sounds gross but they got to go.. Angie IP: Logged |

Sometimes new mothers do not know what to do. Try everything you can to get her to feed them, even if you have to sit in the whelping box with her her head on your lap. Soothe her and tell her its ok. THe colostrum is so important for puppies it helps give them immunity. There is nothing like the nourishmentand of mothers milk. With some bitches it just takes a couple of days before they accept this. How is her milk supply? IT might also be painful when they are nursing. Instead of letting all nurse at once try letting one or two on at a time. This might be better for her. Remember to keep daily records of weight and weight gain and to make sure you know which pup is which to keep track who is eating & gaining. IP: Logged |

i have bottle fed3 littlers of puppies it isnt anything easy its alot of time u have to put in to it to make sure the puppies or kittens get the amount of food they would if they were nursing off mom it would be a good thing for the pups to have atleast 2 days on mother dog but u need to make ur female feed the pups if she has milk no only could her puppies die but she could get masstadites from having milk and no pups eating off her my vet told me to get my female a nice place where she will feel safe and put the pups on her and pet her a praise her let the pups eat till they fall asleep after so many of this doing the mother dog should take care of her pups on her own if not u will have to step in and be there mother till they can eat on there own i am bottle feeding pups now but they will be 5 weeks old monday and are eating on there own very well all i do is make sure they eat and get there tummys full now the problem i had wasnt quite like your the mother dog didnt have any milk so i had to step in if this is your dogs frist time litter ensure her its a good thing dont rip the pups away from her make her take care of them just show her love and that its a good thing to have puppies but now u may be mistaken her nudging the wrong way now if she is getting up as soon as they start sucking and runs off thats a sign she isnt wanting them on her but nudging can be mistaken a mother dog will nudge her puppies to turn them over to clean them my vet even told me a mother dog will nudge them to count them and make sure there all there so i dont know what quite what your female is doing all i can do is offer advice from somone who has done this many times i have bottle fed both kittens and dogs and it isnt easy if u have to bottle feed make sure u know all the information so u will have no problems also u need to keep chart of your puppies weight its hard to find baby scales in stores but what i found useful is a fruit scale if it is small breed pups if it is big breed pups a meat weigher will be just as good as a baby scale i wish u much luck on this and hope they babies will be fine if u do not think u can do it on your own look into letting somone adopt the puppies who will put the devoting time into feeding them! Hi i agree with the other posts, some first time moters no straight away what to do while others don't. was there any intervention while she was delivering or was she left to it as hands in the way can put a dog off and this can cause rejection of the new family. Handfeeding the little ones is going to take alot of your energy and they require feeding every 2hours around the clock and kept warm, it will help if there is more than one of you to do the feeding and all know what your doing as i dont mean to sound awful but feeding wrong can put the formula into the lungs of the puppies thus causing drowing, my advice would be to go see your vet and ask him to show you how to do this correctly or if you know a well established breeder you could ask them. you will also have to help the puppies to goto the toilet you do this by rubbing warm cotton wool across there genitals which stimulates the needs to go toilet, this should be done after every feed. but i do have to agree it is very tiring i only hand fed one of my puppies and it can take a few attempts for them to adjust to the feeding technique... please keep us posted of your's and the puppies progress.... also you could also try like one post said and talk to you dog while placeing a puppy on her teat this reasurring her that this is normal and they not going to hurt her. Also if she has a temperature or something wrong this can also make her reject her babies. if she was moniterd during her labour was all afterbirths ( plasenta's) acounted for as just one left inside can cause severe illness in the bitch IP: Logged |

I learned something new today. I have never dealt with a litter of pups and I never ever heard that the mother licks them and makes them poop. I always thought they just did it naturally. Who woulda thunk. See this is why I come here too to learn. Good luck with your litter Lisa. IP: Logged |
