I recently got a beagle pup (12 weeks old )there was no accidents the first 2 weeks (in her crate) but oonce she went in there the 1st time, she started doing it every night. We started taking up her water dish at 8 pm and also boarded up her crate so she has less room (both pieces of advice from vet) are there any other ways of breaking this habit?

Hiya,

Are you taking your puppy out to potty during the night? The rule of thumb is that your puppy can hold it for as many months as she's old + 1. So at 12 weeks, that's about 4 hours.

Yep. That's true. It is just like taking care of a human baby. When pups are that young they cannot hold it. The timeframe that Alison said above is true - at 3 mos your pup should be out about every four hours. Puppies are alot of work and you won't get much sleep when they are that young but they will thank you and love you more for the work you put into them. Crating helps and that is what I did when my dogs were puppies. Make sure they on;ly have enough room to stand up, turn around and lay down. You don't want your pup to use they bathroom on one side of the crate and sleep in the other. Crate training is hard at first but they get used to it and come to love their crate and use it as a refuge away from things and play in them too. It is their "den" per se. Good luck! Let us know if we can help further!

Yep, what the others said. For the first month or so after we brought our lab pup home, hubby got up once a night to take him out. It is like having a baby!

He's 4 months old now and can "hold it" for 8 hours now, but up until recently it was once a night potty trips!
