My three year old lab just had a epileptic seizure today and the vet said that she should have them a few times a year. Has this happended to anyone else? If so was your dog o.k? IP: Logged |

This happens a couple of times a year with my min. poodle. If it is not an ongoing thing there is no real need to medicate. They don't usually feel an pain while going thru this. If it is grand Mal type it can cause brain damage if not monitored with meds. Once in a while will be ok. How long do they last. My dogs only last about ten seconds but always seem longer. My toy poodle also has seizures. He used to have them frequently in his previous home but since living with me he has only had 2 in this past year. Its scary to see him having one but he seems fine when its all over. IP: Logged |

hi, i have to agree the longer a seizure lasts or the more times it has them a year then medication will be required if the dog is to be ok, like humans a dog doesnt know what happened they just usually get up and go back to what they were doing with no idea they just had a fit. antinconvulsant therapy shouldnt be given to a dog that has only suffered one or two isolated seizures, many epileptic dogs can be adequately controlled on an appropriate anticonvulsant and in a proportion of cases it is even possible to gradually withdraw therapy.
