I would like to apologize for my last post. I had my little sister put it on there because i was going out of town. I know it was so stupid now! she likes to stretch the truth. he was staying inside, just not in our living area...but i have a bad update. we took him to the vet, and they thought is was worms because there was no blood in his stool, and two days later, after medicine wasn't showing results, i went to church, and when i came back, there was blood all over the place, we took him to the vet again today, after what happened last night, and he has parvo. i used the parvo recipe, and i also fed him water through an eye dropper, so that he would keep from getting dehydrated, but i called the vet, they have him on an iv, and they are doing what they can, he got a bit worse, then i think he got a little bit better, but i just don't know if he will make it, i am afraid to call, because something in my heart tells me that they will tell me he didn't make it. he is three years old, which is an unusual age to get parvo. my two dogs are up to date on their shots, but is there still a risk they could get it? i have been cleaning my house and basically anything he touched. i got him from the animal shelter because he needed to be fixed and they pay for it if you let them rest in your house and make sure everything is okay, but i never expected parvo. i need comfort right now, what is the chance of him surviving?

I think I missed your first post but are your other dogs adults or puppies? Healthy Adults most likely not get parvo, but pups could. Chances are they've already been exposed anyway and hopefully will be ok. It is unusual that a 3 yo would contract parvo....unless his immunity was down.

Only a vet can let you know his chances, so call and find out his status. Seeing you in for a visit might also boost his spirits. Good luck. please keep us updated.

well, my other dogs are 8 and about 3( we don't know ringos exact age due to the fact that we found him and he was already full grown!) they are up to date on their shots, and both healthy. the Chihuahua is a foster dog, and we suspect he is 3 or older!

One thing the dog has going for it is it's age. Puppies have a harder time making it because they dehydrate so quickly which is what kills them. My husband's 7 year old black Lab had it when my husband was young. She made is just fine. Good luck and keep us posted on the dogs progress. Are you going to adopt it if it makes it?

I know a little about parvo. So I'll share with you what I know. Dogs with parvo will be a carrier for life. That means he can not go out of your yard for the rest of his life. If you do take him out of your yard your putting other puppies, or adult dogs in danger of getting it also. My cousin has a Akita that she spent $2500 on vet bills saving him from parvo. He got threw it but is still the carrier of it. You have to go threw your house, yard, and car with a mixture of bleach and water... I forget the mesurements exactly. If you do a search under parvo you may learn alot about it. Good luck and you've got my prayers.

I had to look this up because I knew it couldn't be right. Otherwise there would be tons more dogs with Parvo than there already are. Once they have Parvo they are NOT a carrier for life. Once they recover they are in fact immune to it and do not shed the virus anymore to make other dogs sick. Read this article on tips of getting out of your house and yard. It was very interesting.

I don't know who told you they were carriers for life but that would be terrible not to be able to take them anywhere again. Most people wouldn't follow that anyway and there would be a lot more Parvo out there if this were true. Read the article it is stated in there that there is no carrier state and that they aren't contagious after a few weeks. Good luck with the Chihuahua! I hope it makes it through.
