We have a 14 week old lab. We have been pretty successful in housetraining him until this past week. He'd been doing great, no accidents for two weeks and was going to the door to ask to be let out.

Now, his main place is in our family room in the basement. His crate is there, we watch tv there, etc. In July we had a bad storm that caused us to have bad seepage and it ruined our carpeting. Had to throw it out. Since then we have just had area rugs.

Well, last week we put new carpeting down there. We had commercial grade carpeting made in bound sections so that it can be pulled up easily if we get seepage again. The next day after we put this down, our pup began piddling on the new carpeting. Once, we took him out and he came right downstairs and peed right in front of me!

My mom suggested that there is an odor in the new carpet that is attracting him. We rolled up the main section and we're thinking of laying it out in the garage, sprinkling it with that carpet neutrilizer and trying to get the "new" smell out of it.

For now we put the area rugs back down and are seeing how he does.

I don't think he has a urinary tract infection. He never messes in his crate when he's there all night...and in our upstairs where he is only allowed in the kitchen he never messes.

Any thoughts? Would new carpet smell attract a pup to start peeing in the house?

Thanks, Jodi

I read something a few weeks back at the vet that when you get new carpets, the area should be well ventilated and animals and children under twelve should NOT be allowed around them until the new smells comes out of them because there is a particle in the carpet that is only there when it is new. It is poisonous and can kill children and animals. the article said to not allow children and animals on the new carpetting for a good two weeks so they can air out. So my suggestion is do not even allow your dog there for a couple of weeks. Some dogs are territorial pee'ers, I had pups do this at that age when we had something new in the home because they wanted to get this other scent off of it and theirs on it. Fourteen weeks is young, but it is a new and very unfamiliar smell in the carpetting, I am sure he is just trying to make it smell more familiar.
