Hey everyone-- hope someone can point me somewhere.. My boyfriend's grandparents own a four year old sheltie.. The dog is WAY over weight.. anyhow.. she feeds him twice a day (half can dog food (Alpo) cup and a half hard food (Kibbles-n-Bits) Lamb and rice all the way.. She has this dog eating people foods all the time as well and gives it milk everyday.. She is an old woman (80-- but in good health) so you all know older people and how you cannot tell them a thing.. Anyhow.. Laddie started throwing up and it is yellow fluids with white foam.. he lost his apaetite on each day he got sick to his stomach like that and threw up quite an amount of times each time it happened. No one can get her to switch foods.. I got her to get somethign for weight control and all but she won't feed it to him because "He doesn't like it!!" So she went back to the crappy foods-- She will go through ten different foods for that dog if his first response is negative just because he doesn't like it.. I told her it doesn't matter.. it is healthy for him to leave it there and if he gets hungry he will eat it.. not to keep him on the Alpo and Kibbles because it is obviously making him sick.. But.. she won't listen.. Does anyone have anything they can emaildirectly to me so I can print it out and show to her why it is important not to feed dogs people food and not let the dog decide their foods.. any negatives on Kibbles and Bits would be great because she is over feeding him on this stuff and it is only makign his health worse.. The dog is goign to be four next month and he is twenty pounds overweight.. never excercised and is way over fed.. Her cat is almsot fifty pounds.. It's belly is 13 inches wide.. IMO she shouldn't even own animals because this is cruelty, but I need something to convince her that if anythign she is killing the dog and cat by over feeding and not being the one in control of their foods.

I would imagine the people food is a bigger problem than the inferior dog food. Table scraps all day long go a long way to a fat, unhealthy dog.

Not to mention the fact that human food when consumed by pets can be extremely bad for their health!
I read an article recently but cannot remember for the life of me where it can be found but it's shocking to learn just how many things we take for granted when feeding our pets without realising the possible consequences.

Here is one article I found doing a quick search:
http://www.geocities.com/ttownvet/feedingscraps.html

Angie: try going to Google or your favorite search engine and search for "feeding dog human food" and browse through what you find there.

Lucy was 15 lbs overweight when I got her, same scenario, elderly owner not walking her and feeding her table scraps. She almost died she was throwing up the same way you described after I gave her kibbles and bits. She liked them so much she would over eat til she threw up which agrivated a collapsing traec common to small dogs.It seemed cruel not to feed her at first but after a couple of weeks I began to see a difference.I give her 1 cup of Beneful weight control formula, and all the water she wants,She walks 1/2 mile everyday and gets 1 treat a day.Her teeth are cleaner, her breath smells better, she can scratch herself now and can even jump into the car.She is noticebly happier she can wiggle. She's like a new dog.Beneful is not expensive and it looks like kibble beg her to try this routine.

I'm pretty sure kibble and bits is one of the foods that have cancer causing preservatives and bi-products. Tell her that meat bi-products are from animals that could be sick or canderous themselves. Dogs don't know what is good for themselves and will eat them selves silly. Gosh a dog that is 20 lbs. over weight is like a human being 200 lbs overweight. Everyone knows that when one is overweight that it puts tremendous presure on the internal organs. Dogs don't need to eat all day long. If she wants to give a proper amount of premium kibble and give a little snack in the afternoon thats fine, but she is practically digging this dogs grave.

Maine,
Mann, your boyfriends moms dog is probably throwing-up all that milk throwing-off his stomach everyday. Milk everyday can be pretty heavy, especially if he just sits on his ass all day long. Along w/ a full stomach of table scraps, and generic kibble. Does'nt sound good. Sounds like hog-food, not dog-food. Thats how we used to feed my first dog. Luckly, he was'nt that much overweight, because he would run around alot. He was a Boxer. Amazingly, lived up to 14 years. There's alot of good kibble out there, i'm sure you could find a quality one he'll like. Sounds like your stuck in a position where it's up to you to change this dogs life around, & the thinking of your b-boys mom. You know what your doing, you can do it!
