Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me. I've had my 2 jack russells for almost five years now, they're both sisters from the same litter and only a couple of minutes apart in age. My little baby Jazz has a serious problem.

It started out as an itch and she was scratching a little more than usual at it, but we just thought it was a cut or something.
A couple of months ago it got worse so we took her to the vet. The vet gave her some tablets and an injection and just told us it was an allergy since Tara didn't have it. (tara is her sister)

That was a while ago now we've been to the vet 6-7 times. We've tried 3 differernt ones each one said they thought it an allergy but weve had no new carpets, plants, sofas or anything and shes been eating the same food (bakers complete) since she was 4 weeks old!She even had a biopsy done and they still don't know whats wrong with her. I'm just back yet again and the vet said he thought it was some kind of mite that burrows UNDERNEATH the skin but quickly ruled it out when i told him she had a sister and they sleep in the same basket.

We have more tablets to give her and a hood to stop her itching. So someone...anyone help!

Symptoms:
scratching and itching constantly

hair loss all around her feet, ears and under her mouth, around her mouth were her whiskers are too.

swollen belly all red rashes too.

weight gain (but has now lost it again!)

unactive (sits on the sofa all day)

scabs which have gotten to the point of bleeding on her ears (the bit were her head and ear meet!)

Swollen, red running eyes

a horrible smell coming from her ears

she constantly shakes her head (i think its something to do with her ears)

someone please help shes so unhappy and shes been suffering for months its really unfair.
thanks,
Jenna

The hairless toes and face and all sounds like mange, but the rest I do not know.. Have them do a skin scraping for mange. My advice to you is consult another vet as well. Mange (demodectic) is not contagious.. however, adult mange is worse than it is in pups, so she might have it and have secondary infections as well.. try seeing a different vet for one and have them do a skin scraping..

This is what my dog, it really does sound like mange. In well taken care of dogs mites don't always show up in a scraping. My dog had to go thru 3 special dips at the vets office. They do them in ten day intervals. Did you have them check his ears also. Their are mites that inhabit the ears too. You have already wasted alot of money on things that don't work. Maybe its time to go to another vet. I'm with Main Pitbull some sort of mange. Also, some dogs that get it are more so prone to some sorts of mange, can't remember which one, but maybe this is why Tara does not have the problem. If it is mange you will need to clean all the areas that your dog sleeps etc. I love that name tara, I was thinking of using that name for whatever female dog I ever get in the future. It also reminds me of Ireland. My father lives in Galway. Good luck.

I'm not a vet, and I can only tell you what we went through with our youngest dog, a German Shepherd puppy that we recently adopted. His skin and fur was all messed up, pretty much like what you're describing. It turned out when we took him to the vet that he had:
1) Demodectic mange (all dogs have it, only some of them are born without the natural immunity )
2) Skin infection - old scratches or bites or what have you that were not noticed and treated on time, plus maybe flea bites that he scratched and got them infected
3) and most important - you may want to have your vet check into this - fungi. Yes, he had a skin fungus that was making him miserable.

Our puppy has been on medication for 5 weeks, with 3 more to go, to include 2 kinds of antibiotics, and a special shampoo for the fungus. We bathe him every other day (which he hates, but there's no way around it!!). He also had a horse strength pill for the fungus.

All I can tell you is that you wouldn't even tell now that this is the same puppy we adopted 6 weeks ago. His fur is back to being nice and shiny.

Our dog had a similar problem. He was actually put on thyroid medicine, and antibiotics. (I almost fainted when the vet cleaned his ears!) See, the thyroid problems lowered his immunaties, and he couldn't fight off skin infections or ear mits by himself. After two courses of antibiotics and six months of thyroid medicine he was like a puppy-fur-ball again! He had to stay on the thyroids until he passed away earlier this year, but it was worth it to end his skin and ear miseries.

I'm with shade... have his thyroid levels checked. Thyroid inbalances can cause all the symptoms you described. Her ears may be infected also, which would be why they stink and are sore. The vet can clean them and give you meds to clear it up if that's the case.

I agree with everyones post.
Look into all of whats been described, and possibly look into checking in w/ a specialist/dermatologist.
It's definatly more expensive, but definatly more narrowed down, and can be straight to the point.
Which in the end, may save you money.
Your dog has a serious skin problem(s), and can be costly.
But i'd say, it's all currable.
Your own research 1st, then go in asap.
Keep us posted on what the vet or specialist recommends.
