I posted this question on toy dogs but everyone seems to be busy there and only one response. It is dawning on me that there could be a clue to whether your dog will suffer from ear infections. My poodle has gotten them in the past and before she started getting thornit powder in her ears she had one nearly yearly. Her wax was brown on the dark side. My neighbors mini. pinscher seems to suffer from them also, he too gets dark brown wax. My terriers ear wax is almost invisible and blends into the white of his ear inside. If dirt blows in then its visible. He never gets them. Another gal from toy dogs has claimed her poodle has brown wax and is prone to them. So my question is what have been your findings. Is this something to go on as to wether your dog will be prone to ear infections or not. What color is your dogs wax and does he/she get infections?

Interesting question!!

I haven't noticed much ear wax in my new puppy. However my old dog used to have dark-brownish ear wax and he was not prone to ear infections at all.

That's just my experience though and with only one dog!! I'm interested to see others response.

Yes, it interesting to me too. I want to hear from as many people as possible. If you want you can read the same post over at toy dogs and see what their responses are too. So far just one response, but it goes along with my theory.

Puttin,
My GSDs don't have any kind of wax (well, I'm sure they actually do, but you can't see it, and it won't come out when I clean their ears).
The floppy eared ones all have dark brown awfully smelling wax, and yes, they do get infections often. My fridge is filled with miticids and ear cleaning lotions for them.

My little pekeapoo was just diagnoised with an ear infection last night. I was cleaning her ears once a week, with the powder and ear wash etc. She's only three months old and I think she had the ear infection when I bought her, maybe, but anyway it is as everyone states brown and smelly. My Yorkie never has anything in his ears, and he only gets his ear cleaned by the groomer. The new puppies ears seem like they may require weekly attention.

I wonder if the brown in the earwax is blood? If the ear is slightly infected and has a small amount of bleeding and drainage, it could show up brown in the earwax. Perhaps, these dogs suffer from a constant low level infection.

I think perhaps it is the yeast level that changes the color, possibly.
Dogangel: My terrier is the same way, his ears take a really long time to accumaltae anything at all. His just feel kind of like slighty oily skin, then with his ear being upright if and dirt eventually makes it way up there all he needs is a damp towel to wipe his ears clean. My neighbors min. pinscher has very upright ears and always gets the ear infections, but he also has brown wax.
Beautiful girl: I would suggest getting the ear infection under control thru the vet and trying out thornit powder for dogs. It really keeps Sasha's ear free of wax, I think like I said it has to do with the yeast level getting to high and causing the infection. Take a look at this page www.championpets.freeserve.co.uk/ears.htm Hopefully we will be infection free from now on. This thornit powder was high recommended by some poodle owners I know online. It is also a mite killer too.

Yes the vet did give Miette some ear medicine, he said it was just a mild ear infection but there seemed to be a lot of wax in her ears for such a "minor infection." I'd hate to see a really bad one. Puttin, I'll definately get the powder you suggested I wasn't sure what to get Miette, so last week I just picked up an ear wash and powder kit at PetSmart, but if the thornit powder works best I'll glady switch over to that.

Just make sure you get the ear infection in check first and start off with infection free. Use the powder as a preventative. About a week to two weeks after using the thornit you baby should not be plagued by wax. I'm sorry if I sound like a commercial, but when I find something I believe in I have to share what I have found. Thank goodness someone shared it with me.

Thanks I love the advice, Teddy and Miette are my first dogs and since they are both a year and younger I'm still learning. I'm so glad I found this site because it gives me a chance to share with other dog owners and to learn about things I didn't know and post things that I may have come across for others who may not know. So thanks Puttin I'm gratful for all the advice.
