How often can I bathe my dog? She is a toy poodle and until recently she stayed inside most the time. I started taking her to the dog park almost every day if not every other day. Since she has been outside she has began to get a bad odor. Nothing I cant live with, but it was really nice when she stayed inside and had NO smell. I'm not a mean person so of course she is going to still go to the park. She has a wonderfully soft coat and I dont want to put anything on her that will mess with that. I have heard of all kinds of things from powders to perfume. I was just wondering how often I can bathe her. I dont want to strip her coat of the oils she needs.

There is no way in the world I could be content with bathing my poodle 2x a year. Her coat is much different from a shepards. She starts getting dirty looking about a week after a bath.
Nessa: As long as Angel does not show any signs of skin issues, like dry flaky skin. There are plenty of people that bathe their dogs once a week. I have done this also. Lately its been every two weeks. Just water down a gentle shampoo and go ahead. My favorites are mane and tail and pantene. The the conditioner. I don't care what anybody has to say. My dogs have got no skin problems and I have used these products for a few years now. So, if you feel the need to bathe Angel more often go ahead. Once a week is fine. And then again there are those terrible accidents that really need fixing up(like poo rolled in poop) or something 2 days after his bath. You do what you need too.

I have a Labradour x Kelpie, and a staffy x. Because they lives outside, they normally get bathed about 4-5 times during the summer, but I tend not to bathe them that much during the winter probably 2-3 times.

I think it really depends on what type of dog you have and whether or not it lives inside or outside.

If it is a poodle, I would bathe it abit more, because of the fur.

I just want to add that I tried a shampoo called HyLyt, which my vet recommended and I have never seen such a beautiful coat on my Husky after using this shampoo. I also use it on my Austrailian Shepherd. It is soap free and hypoallergenic. It makes their coat so shiny and soft-like nothing else I have tried. It is not available in pet stores, only at a Vet clinic. I was skeptical when he recommended it because it is not cheap, but what a beautiful job it does. I used to groom dogs and have tried many shampoos and conditioners. Try HyLyt- you will LOVE it! I bathe my Husky about every 2 or 3 months, my Aussie- whenever she plays in the mud, or just gets dirty, which is usually about once every couple of weeks.

Hi there, I've owned 3 toy poodles in my life and I bathed them on average 1x per month. A good brushing every single day will help postpone the need for baths. You will be surprised how much of the dirt from the dog park will brush off.

I had them professionally groomed at least 4x per year. I don't know what your preference is as to cut, but for maintenance purposes, I kept mine all in a "puppy cut" which meant short body hair, poms on tip of the tail and the head. The paws were shaved (nails were painted!). The nose and around the eyes were shaved, but the "moustache" was left long. Keeping them in this shorter cut kept the hair from matting and made brushing easier. When I bathed them on my own, I used baby shampoo and some sort of coat conditioning I bought at PetSmart. If I remember, it was a pump aerosole bottle which I spritzed on, rubbed in and then combed through. It smelled wonderful!

the more baths a dog has the more likely your washing the oils from its fur my dog goes for walks in the park down to the river and so on she is long haired but providing that she is groomed properly everyday she is fine my grandparents own 3 poodles and they bath there dogs at least 3 times a yr as i say the more bathing involved the less oil the dog has there dogs go running in fields and alsorts but they r groomed twice a day and have never had a smell come off them but each owner has there own opinion on bathing get advice from your vet on how often to bath your dog

The old school of thinking was that dogs shouldn't be bathed more than once a month. This was when people used to use human hair shampoo which can be bad for their skin. Now they make so many dog shampoos that they say you can bathe your dog as often as you want. My Poodles get bathed every couple of weeks or so. Go ahead and bathe her as often as you want Nessa. Unless she has skin problems or allergies I'm sure she'll be fine. For allergies some people use an Oatmeal Shampoo. Good luck and have fun at the dog park.

Sorry if you feel like I was stepping on your toes or something but most people I know bathe their dogs often and don't have any problems. I don't know what the oils do to protect the skin and coat. Could you please enlighten me? I have taken a college course in Animal Science specifically for dogs and cats so I know some about animals too. I am 34 years old and have had dogs all my life. If you are that much older than me then please act your age. I wasn't attacking you or second guessing you. Sorry if you feel like I did. I was just stating what I know and my experiences.

I'm new here but I have a problem keeping my mouth shut sometimes =). These boards are for people to ask questions and get opinions on things. Yup opinions, everyone is entitled to their own and since this is the place to share them one should not get offended (or rude for that matter) if people disagree with them.

Charmedagain- I agree, oils in the dogs skin do help protect their coats. However, maybe "back in the day" when you were in vet school the shampoos were not as good as they are today. The key in bathing your dogs is to use a good, soap-free shampoo, as I suggested earlier-like HyLyt, for one. I imagine there are plenty of others. Natural moisturizing promotes hydration of the skin and coat- the fatty acids nourish the skin and aid in controlling flaking and scaling. Just buy a good shampoo, and I think you can use your own disgression in how often you want to bathe your dog. If you have specific concerns or problems, speak to your vet and follow their advice.

It's not as if I wanted to make everybody happy, (which I actually do...), but:
Nessa, I think you can bathe your puppy as often as you want. It is a poodle, therefore their cat needs more attention than other breeds, especially if she hasn't been groomed recently. I bathe my mini dachsies every 10 days or so. Basically, when they start to have that doggie odor, back to the bathie with them. My German Shepherds are a completely different story. I only bathe them 3 maybe 4 times a year. GSDs have a very sensitive skin, and what charmedagain said id true. They need their natural oils to protect them from getting all kinds of skin problems. Believe it or not, even though I bathe them so rarely, they don't stink. Not bathing doesn't mean they stay filthy. I brush them and wipe their coats with a warm damp cloth.
What Lacey said is also true. Nowadays, there is a whole bunch of doggie shampoos out there that are specifically formulated to not harm the doggies' skin.
So go ahead and bathe your baby.

The purpose of having oil glands is to protect and lubricate the dogs skin which helps to protect against infection and keep the hair and skin soft. Cleansing too much will remove the natural oils, consequently, it also may cause the dog to produce more oils, requiring bathing more frequently. Not enough oil on the hair and skin could cause drying out and brittleness.

Moderation is the key...... As depends on the individual dog - those who show dogs in conformation may wish to present a bathed dog. Those who own breeds with fur that requires upkeep and grooming may bathe more often. Also length of hair long/short........time of year etc. Some dogs like to roll in nasty things more than other dogs.... Personally a few baths a year is not enough for my dogs, but I would never need to bathe them more than once a month.
