I came home from work last night and Jake came over and slobbered black stuff again all over me - I thought this cant be cat poop and again did a thorough search (not good enough the first time). And found almost like a horrible hole on his lower side lip a few inches long the skin was hanging over it hiding it. I think it may have been caused by a metal can he got a hold of a few weeks and and chewed it to death and cut himself. I did check his gums after this but didnt see anything and will find out for sure this afternoon since he has a vet appt.

ok this sounds gross it wasnt a cut but has what the vet calls "old dog disease" As they get older their slobber accumulates in their folds of the their lips/skin and causes bacteria to grow "the black stuff" it can lead to infection, but the way to nip it in the bud is to keep the area clean with peroxide. So he suggested cleaning these area weekly to prevent the gook from building up

Honeybear- what kind of dog do you have that has the "old dog disease"? I am just curious. I have a 16 year old Husky with horrible breath, but just figured it was age. Guess I better check out her gums a little closer. She also has a lot of warts on her skin (more fun things to look forward to with an old dog One of her warts has gotten pretty big and is under her chin. It is full of blood (I know, kind of gross) and if she bumps it on things, it bleeds. The vet said the trama and risk putting her to sleep to take it off is not worth it and to just live with it. I agree with him- it is more of a cosmetic thing than anything else, and I would never put her through surgery just for a wart, but it does bleed and get on furniture, clothing...anyone else have this problem? I have tried using talc- she hates it and rubs it off, making the whole problem much worse.
