Hi There

We have a beautiful golden retriever, he's nearly one. We've had a couple of incidents of hotspots with him. After the first one we did everything the vet recommended but he still got another one which just came up really quickly. A few days ago i noticed a hard lump near his thumb (well i don't know if dogs have thumbs but it seems to be the equivalent to ours what ever it is!!!)...about the size of a large pea, anyway the next day it was more inflamed
and was a bit bloody. Its now a bit larger and looks is quite raw. I don't know whether it is worse from him getting at it, I'd actually only seen him lick it, nothing else like scratching or biting, or whether it has just gotten worse on its own. I can't find anything that resembles it on the web though I'm starting to worry it might be some form of mange. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

My I feel for you and hot spots, my lab used to get them until I switched his food - no hot spots this summer! as for the hard lump, I am not sure it could be a bite, and he has chewed it. it doesnt sound like a hot spot since it is raised, if it does not get better in a few days, I would take him to the vet.

It could be some sort of boil,or skin growth such as cancer or not could be some non maligant growth, but if its bleeding it should be looked at. If you can separate the lump from the bone(its not grown into the bone) then it can probably be surgically removed. Just have a vet look at it. They can also biopsie it before and after removal. If need be. Hope its something minor.

hi, you will find that he may have been bitten by an insect as some dogs react when bitten try bathing it with a little warm water and salt and it may start to clear up if this hasbt worked then he needs to see a vet i wouldnt go as far as to say it could be cancer or something like that as it doesnt sound like its a tumour its sounds more like an insect bite. my dog gets a lump the size of a golf ball if she is bitten by an insect i just bathe with warm water and salt and it clears on its own after a couple of days keep us posted on this matter

Hi...Thanks for the advice, I'm going to try bathing it and see how it goes, if its no better in a couple of days we'll be off to the vet. Honeybear I'm interested in what you said regarding the change of diet stopping the hotspots, can you give me somemore help regarding that.

Thanks again

goldenmax, I have been on my "soapbox" here for several months since Jake has been on Innova because I just cant believe the change in Jake since I changed him to this food, Someone directed me to a website that was dedicated to goldens and their skin problems(I will try to find it for you) that basicly said most of the problems (especially hot spots) are do to diet and the commercial foods you feed them, ie science diet, purina, etc. and what the ingredients are which is pretty disgusting when you do the research. the website promoted these foods called Innova, Canidae, solid gold and a few others I dont remember and also the raw diet (which I didnt want to do). Anyone that feeds their dogs these foods have nothing but praise for them. check out innovas web site www.naturapet.com There has also been a lot of talk recently here on food - in the last few months, just peruse past posts on food. These are also very informative.

Basicly, for the past 6 years Jake has been lethargic - overweight, nothing I could do would get the weight off. chronic ear problems and oh those horrible hot spots. Well - He has had no hot spots this summer, his weight is down 6# and he has so much energy. Innova can be found at feed stores and they also have a search on their web site to find who carries it near you.
