Hi! i work at the local animal shelter as a community service project (i do lots of community serveice because it makes me feel good, plus it will look great on scholarship applications) Every Saturday from 10am to 2 pm i go to the animal shelter and give the dogs walks, play with the kittens, help clean pens, and all sorts of stuff. I myself am an animal lover, i have 2 dogs, and a cat, i dog-sit for friends and family, and i have even started my own doggie treat business! These dogs are so precious, and my heart goes out to them, i want to know how i can get these dogs good homes, because a lot of people go and buy dogs just bcuz they are full bred...i see more dogs come in than i do leave, most are killed, and that makes it 10x worse! what can i do??? I would say one thing you could do is to try to make the dogs more applealing. The ones that come in that need to be groomed. They get overlooked if they don't look good. Alot of people can't see past the appearance. So I think that would be one major hurdle. IP: Logged |

well, i groom and bathe them if they need it, but i need to make the thought of going to the animal shelter to get the pet more appealing! it seems nobody comes to get these precious babies! IP: Logged |

What people don't realize is that a lot of full blood dogs end up at the shelter they just don't have papers. I would never buy a dog or cat from a breeder while animals are being put to sleep because there are no homes for them. Try posting pictures of the animals around town so people can see that you have good animals there. IP: Logged |

daphne, I'm not sure if you shelter has this already but I would suggest starting a webpage. Our Humane Society has one. Once a week someone takes pictures of all the new comers and they post it on the site. They also use this site to educate people about dogs, and like you said entice them to come in instead of going for a pure breed. They offer a service that people can fill out a form for a specific breed/breed mix and the shelter notifies them if they get any in. Everything on the internet these days I guess but it is such a good way to get information out there and it's not hard to learn very basic HTML in order to make the page yourself!
NewLabOwnr Thought I would add www.lollypop.org that is the page for the Humane Society near us. [This message has been edited by NewLabOwnr (edited 09-02-2003).] [This message has been edited by NewLabOwnr (edited 09-02-2003).] IP: Logged |

Exactly what I was going to add. I found both of my dogs on www.amrt.net Take a look at how they do things and maybe someone can get out their camera and start clicking away. When I first found them I was new to the ways of the computer but figured everything is on it why not look, I think many people may do the same thing. It saves on footwork. Daphne: I think that is great that you volunter at the shelter. I have been wanting to go down to my local shelter and volunter. I think the only thing holding me back, is the fact that I dont want to see all the wonderful dogs get "put to sleep". I think I'll call them today and schedule a day to volunter this week.
