My friend has a black lab that they rescued from a locel market where it was hit by a car. Her name is shoeshine, she is so sweet! BUT! My friends stepdad is horribly mean. He liked the dog, but when her mom and her stepdad got in a fight, he said that if they didn't get rid of her, he would shoot it. Well, i have found it a home, but my friends mom thinks it might have signs of mange on her ear, but that it hasn't spread or anything at all in the past 2 or 3 weeks. They want to take it to a vet, but her stepdad doesn't give her mom ANY money at all, so her mom has to buy groceries, and take care of 3-5 people on 1 child support check each month, therefore, not giving her extra money to take it to the vet. The person i found a home for it is going to take it to the vet, but i just want to know if it sounds like mange to you?

daphne, I just did a search on mange and it it said all mange types are like oozing sores, so It sounds like like something else and not mange. and if it is staying the same it may be just an irritation that is finally healing, and probably something very minor so glad you found a loving home for her.

here is some info

Dogs with scabies dig and bite at themselves with great ferocity. Their skin reacts with oozing sores, and secondary infection may set in, requiring treatment with an antibiotic in addition to treatment for the mites. Unfortunately, the sarcoptic mange mite can be difficult to find in skin scrapings, and unless the veterinarian parts the hair and carefully examines the bare skin for the characteristic pin-point bite marks, diagnosis is difficult. Furthermore, the presence of a secondary skin infection can hamper the search for the mite bite marks.

Telltale signs of sarcoptic mange are crusty ear tips, fierce itching, and hair loss, particularly on the ears, elbows, legs, and face in the early stages. Later on, the hair loss spreads throughout the body.

Honeybear,
This is true for the sarcoptic mange. This kind (sarcoptic) is more aggressive and difficult to treat.
Daphne, your puppy may have demodectic mange, and by your description it is possible that he has it. This kind is less aggressive and a lot easier to treat (and not very expensive either, about $100.00 at my vet). If you also notice some fur loss or some spots around the snout, I would say chances are it is demodectic mange. But they need to take the puppy to the vet anyway, to do a complete check up on him
Btw, I think it's wonderful for you to care so much about him and find him a good new home.

I was going to add that I adopted a dog who had had bad demodectic mange. She still was missing fur. The rescue group I adopted her from said ivermectin works on demodectic mange, and gave me some to put in her water.

dogs with allergies tend to get red thickened ears with some hair loss. Also another thought would be flies biting its ears.
