We're thingking about getting a second dog, both for us and as a companion to our dog Molly, who we got from a shelter in April. Molly tends to be dominant and can be somewhat aggressive when on-leash (barks, pulls hard toward the other dog) but her reaction seems to be based on what the other dog is doing as well.

My question is whether we should get a male dog, and if we should get a puppy or an adult dog (I've heard that females sometimes have problems accepting other females). Or if Molly should be an only dog!

Thanks--this bulletin board has helped me so much.

Caligirl, sounds like your dog needs some training issues resolved first (that usually come with being a shelter dog) - if you go and read some the recent posts from the last couple of weeks, there is a slew of helpful advice and recommendations on the agressive/dominant thing and what to do. As for getting another dog, when the time is right I thing it is a great idea, except I have no idea on the sex issue. I am sure someone here can help on that.

I think it's great!!!
If you want to get a second dog, the best way to do it is let Molly pick her new pal rather than you. Take her to the shelter, or wherever you plan on getting the other dog from, and let her choose. Chances are she will pick a boy, but it may very well be a girl too, you just never know, gogs have their prefferences like we do. It is very important to let them know each other on neutral territory before bringing the new doggie home.
Anyway, Honeybear is right, Molly would benefit a lot from some trainig classes, to work on her "good manners"(!!!)
Again, congratulations on your decision!!!
Btw, my six dogs are all rescues, so.....

wow dogangel 6 dogs! I love to hear people like you rescue and can handle that manydogs. I keep bungging my husband to get another one I have 2. But I was just thinking this morning trying to get ready for work how I barely make out the door to get to work on time because of my dogs play time. What would normally be 20 minutes is over an hour - dogs want to play fetch and chase me, chase me and balls under dressers, wew! not to mention the cat under foot wanting attention.
What a great idea about letting the current dog pick out the other dog. There are so many great ideas posted here

Honeybear,

Why does that sound sooooo familiar???
Let's put it this way: I get up at 6 o'clock even though I'm fortunate enough to be just a 5 minutes drive away from my work....and I need to be there at 8 o'clock?!
Do I need to tell you what happens at lunch when I come home???? Again, a little hint, I need to change my blouse everytime I leave home, otherwise ALL of my clothes would have the same pattern: large paw prints on the front of the blouse/shirt/t-shirt what have you...

Thanks for the advice--I definitely want to do more training with her, and when she's learned some manners I'll let her look around. I'm thinking about taking her to the DogWash fundraiser (for the local shelter) tomorrow just to see her socialize when she's not on her turf.
