Parvo is a virus that attacks the intestinal lining of a puppy or dog. It is a very aggresive virus one that if not treated immediately will cause death. The virus itself is survivable with proper treatment - its the dehydration from the vomiting and bloody stools that will kill your pet. The vet said Odie survived because we got him into the vet within a few hours of his symptoms. The internet is full of information on this deadly virus. With proper immunization - your pet hopefully will not get it. They figure our puppy's first immunization was given too early and therefore not effective. We are not experts on this virus - we are just survivors of it!

They get Parvo if they have not had their shots. I forget at the moment possibly the corona one. I am sure someone will say which it is. Parvo is very deadly. A dog with out its shots just need to walk past an infected spot and can pick it up. Vaccinate your dogs to protect them.

They get it from other dogs. This is why you are not supposed to take puppies to places with other dogs until they have had their shots.

Parvo is probably the most aggressive and contagious virus a puppy can get. It is an absolute MUST to give your puppy the DHPPL vaccine. (This is a compbination of five shots - against hepatitis, distemper , parvovirus and something else, I just forgot exactly what...) Parvo virus is very resistant also, one has to literally treat the infected ares with chlorine to distroy it, which is virtually impossible in parks, dog runs, etc... I was once told that an area can stay contaminated up to 8 years if not properly disinfected and decontaminated.
As Odie's mommy and daddy can tell you, the symptoms are very clear, and if you don't take your puppy to the vet like immediately, chances are he/she would not make it.
Never, ever leave your puppy without the proper care of a vet and vaccinations!!

Here is a good educational link on Parvo. http://www.animalclinic.com/parvo.htm

The DHLPP vaccine includes Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospira, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza.

In addition to the DHLPP vaccine, many Vets also suggest the Corona vaccine. http://www.woahvets.com/vaccine_description.html

I've revamped a post on Parvo. Auspetian has posted some good information. You can read it here:
http://www.auspet.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000088.html

or See the thread titled "Regarding Parvaid"

FYI a 5 way combo is not what is needed to protect against Parvo. The parvovirus vaccine is the shot that is supposed to protect against parvo. Just a word of caution, there have been cases and puppies I have personally known, where the pup WAS vaccinated for parvo and got parvo. Even if the dog has been vacc'ed there still are no guarantees.

Parvo is not an airborne virus either. Dogs AND other animals (and even people) can transmit the virus if they have come in contact with it.

I do not believe the DHPPL 5 way combo shot is a must. I do not give my pups the 5 way combo. I, like many other breeders follow Jean Dodd's puppy vaccine protocol which includes the parvo and distemper shots. You can read more here http://www.doglogic.com/vaccination.htm I will also run Titres on my dogs.

The Parvovirus is a small DNA virus which is extremely resistan to enviromental conditions and many disinfectants it survices in faeces or faecally contaminated ground for many moths and it is almost impossible to eliminate infection completely from a contaminated area.... indirect contact, by fomites such as feeding bowls brushes ect or in a contaminated inviroment.... infection occurs by ingestion of the virus which is taken up in the throat or intestine and carried in the blood to the lymphoid tissues of the animal...in weaned puppies and dogs the most suitable place for the virus is the bottom of the intestinal lining...the intestine can cope with some loss of cells but if left untreated the absobtion of food and water is no longer possible and the animal develops enteritis and diarreah.. the dogs immune system will respond to the infection and will eliminate the virus from the body if the damage isnt to servere....treatment entails in mild cases withholding solid food and giving frequent ammounts of fluid may be the only treatment needed...only in really servere cases where the damage is too bad will death occur due to a secondary infection hope this gives u the information you need

The statement that parvo is not spread from dog to dog is not true. I picked up a stray with parvo and it passed it to a litter of puppies we had. Most of them died. I hadent gotten them to the vet yet, but the vet tested the stray and the puppies all tested positive. I also learned from this if u pick up a stray keep it seperated from other dogs im sure anyone with a brain knows this but for some reason i still had them together : (

yes the virus can be transmitted from dog to dog and when getting a new a new dog it should be kept quaranteed away from other dogs that are in the household until given all clear from a vet, there are some dogs that are actually prone to the virus and just carry it but never actually get sick themselves

I dont know if you're refering to my comment:
"Dogs AND other animals (and even people) can transmit the virus if they have come in contact with it."

....but it is true - anyone (or animal) that has come into contact w/the virus can transmit it to *pups & young dogs*
