Help!Rottweiler 3 1/2 yrs old.Our Baby Chance had a bad start in life he was actually bottle fed at the age of 3days old with no Mother Rotty around. He has always had a sensitive stomach, this last month he totally stopped eating dry dog food,so I tried canned food this worked for a couple of days & he stopped eating again.Well the Vet told us not to feed him people food, but I was desperate(he was losing weight) so I cooked him up some ground turkey and he hasn't turned away from it he actually wolfs it down.I've been reading about feeding Rotty's homemade food and was wondering if ground turkey was okay and what about adding rice and how much of the turkey should I feed him per day.If you would know of any recipes I could use or any suggestion to get him started back on dry food,I found out that he will not touch the ground turkey if I mix canned or dry dog food in it.Please any suggestions will help we love Chance Dearly. He also has Bad Breath that I have recently noticed.

As far as you rotty goes feeding him only that can be dangerous to him. Chec out the site below. It is a rottweiler specific forum and has alot of good information on it. It is a private forum but go ahead and try to join I will let the manager know you may be coming. As a rottweiler owner and als a rottweiler rescuer I know how much small things can upset the balance in them. There is alot of info on the healthand nutrition board specifically for rottweilers.

Hello :-D

I noticed you stated " He has really bad breath!"

I would like to suggest a visit to the Vet for a dental exam.

Often times, bad breath indicates teeth or gum problems.

If your dog's teeth are in bad shape, it migh hurt his teeth or mouth to eat dry food.
If you've ever had a toothache, you'll understand how painful it can be for a dog who has a tooth problem to eat dry food.

I can't say if feeding him Turkey is or is not OK. Your *Vet* is the best person to ask!!

Something to keep in mind, when you are able to get her to eat...ask your vet about adding a probiotic to her food. This will help her body utilize the most nutrients from the food she is eating. I would also ask that her teeth and mouth be checked and I agree with the whole "she is not going to starve herself to death" statement. We had a GS who looked like we starved him, we tried all sorts of stuff, spent tons of money vets and specialists. They finally told us two things, one he was having troubles with his ears and paneosteoitis(sp?)both of these caused pain which could account for low appetite...he did not always have a low appetite though and even when he was eating really well, he did not gain weight, to this we were told "some people are thin and some are heavy, dogs are the same...leave him be" It was a hard thing to go through with this dog we loved, we never did get an answer and struggled much with him. When you feel like you are at a dead end with your regular vet perhaps consider a Holistic vet.
