Our 9 week old Jack Russel Terrier has been at the vet all day and is at the emergency vet overnight with an IV. He's either got some blockage in his system or he's got something wrong with him internally. Berrium fluid hasn't made it past his stomach.

We're so sad because we can't afford to pay for a surgery. We've spent $600 to try to find out what's wrong with him today and they really can't figure anything out.

Personally, I think the vet may have given him too much medicine/vacination Monday when he had his final puppy shot but I have no expertise so it's just an opinion.

I am so sad I'm getting physically ill. My wife is so sad about it too. I wonder if she'll ever recover if he dies on us or we have to put him to sleep.

He was perfectly fine before that shot. The emergency vet just called me and said he was perking up a bit but his temperature is starting to drop so they're going to do some heat treatment.

We pick him up at 6:30am. I'm guessing we'll take him to our normal vet and she'll make us choose life or death.

I love you little doggie.

I'm so sorry to hear it. I hope your puppy pulls through. (And he is so cute). I'm sure it's frustrating that they don't seem to know what's wrong.

You mentioned that you can't afford surgry. I don't know if this would be on interest to you, but vets have services that work like credit cards. We had $1500 surgery on our cat who was blocked because he ate an earplug. We didn't have the money. The vet signed us up for a payment plan. If I remember, it was interest free for something like a year. It made paying much easier for us and saved our beloved kitty. (I just wanted to mention that in case you hadn't realized that there are payment options in some cases.)

I'd like to hear what happens (hopefully it's good news).

I'll keep him in my thoughts.

Update: He made it through the night fine. We was pretty perky given the situation when we picked him up this morning to move him to his normal vet.

The normal vet is going to do some x-rays to see if the berrium has moved since yesterday.

The normal vet is also significantly cheaper if surgery is required.

I'll keep posting updates.

He very well could have a blockage. It could be coincidental with the shots and it happened all at once. Sometimes a dog can be born also with too small of an intestinal track(too narrow) and only tiny amounts of food can pass. That would need surgery. I have used a care credit card and probably again this monday. Hope he gets better.

He's home now!

He hasn't thrown up in over 24 hours and he's been drinking electrolyte fluids. All his blood work looks great. He's been peeing, so now we just need to see his rear end functions and it will should be smooth sailing if it does.

So happy to hear that this little Jack Russell is at least perky and still with us! As long as he stays perky, take the time to get a 2nd opinion no matter what your regular vet says. Think of this situation as you would if one of your human loved ones was in it and don't be afraid to shop around for a vet.

So glad to see your puppy is much better.
He is a beautiful baby!!

Just one question,, you said the pup got his final puppy shot,,isn't 9 weeks too young for ALL their shots?

Have you had the pup for over 1 week?

We've had him for 3 weeks now. Or maybe this Sunday will be the 4th week. I can't quite remember at the moment.

All I know is that they gave him a 5 in 1 shot for parvo and a couple of other things.
They gave him the worm medication and gave him bordetlla (nasal).

From what I understand that was his last puppy shot, but maybe I misunderstood.

Poor guy. I'm still pretty worried. He has been sleeping and he woke up suddenly and started dry heaving but never actually threw up. I think it scared him more than anything. As soon as he finished he went right back to sleep. He sure doesn't feel very well.

Well this is probably my final post to the board. (I'll be emailed any responses however)

Toby was doing better last night. A bit playful and he even went poop so we thought he was in the clear. Today he's taken a turn for the worse. The poor guy is down to skin and bones.

My wife have been talking and crying about the situation all morning.

We've basically come to the conclusion that it's financially impossible to try the operation and we're going to have to put him down.

My wife is so heartbroken. I hope she doesn't get depressed. I am too, but I have my own ways of dealing with these sorts of things.

Thanks for all the advice and support through these last couple of days.

I've left a message for the vet to call me. When she calls I'm going to tell her that we can't afford the operation and ask if she knows anyone that could adopt him and afford it or ask her if she'd be willing to barter services as I do web design and application development. I don't think I'm going to say the words to put him down though. I'll let her make that decision as it's too much for me to bear.

Goodbye Toby. We loved you so so much.

Well maybe it's not my last post afterall...

What a relief... Sarah and I got on our knees and prayed that God would just open the heart of our vet and allow her to seriously consider the offer of bartering in exchange for a website.

She has agreed. I think this is a sign from God that the surgery will be successful.

He's going on the table as I type. I'll keep everyone posted.

I really hope to hear good news from you about the surgery. I'll keep the little guy in my prayers. I hope he pulls through and has a happy, healthy life with people who care so much about him.

I hope I see an update with good news soon.

Well surgery is over...

The good news is that we now know that there are no blockages in his system and that he seemed to be unphased by the surgery mostly.

The bad news is that we aren't sure what the problem is. The vet is giving him some motility drugs to get his innards going again.

Hopefully the drugs will work and it's just a matter of time before he's running around again.

HI! I'm so sorry about you puppy. I have a Jack russel too. She almost died when she was 8 weeks old. She started having random seizures so we took her to the vet and they decided to keep her for 4 days. It broke my heart she had an IV. She got worse as each day went by and went blind. They came to the conclusion that she had distemper and needed to be put down. When we went to get her she was pitiful, We had to take her to her vet to be put down but he wasnt in so we had to wait 4 three days. Each day se got better and better and by the time we tolk her to the vet she could see and was as hyper as any jack. Well the vet retested her and the distemper was wrong. She was fine. The reason why she was having the seizures was because of beromic pressure. One of the seizureies had caused her brain to swell and she went blind. She is now a healthy 6 month old bundle of jot! I dont know what i would do if i lost her. I hape your puppy will be ok I know what your going through.

I'm sorry to hear about your puppy. I suspect vaccination or OVER vaccination is the cause of many problems and many vets fail to see this. Vaccinosis IS way more common then people realize and vets care to omit.

I'll try and write more on it later (its late) or if you do a web search on Vaccinosis perhaps you will find a relation. A couple years ago a pup from one of our past litters almost died of this after being given a combo by the owner's vet. Pup had a horrendous reaction which overloaded the system. Funnily enough the vet failed to admit this was the cause but the vaccine company was quick to step in and pay the huge vet bills - hmmm. The other vets who saw the pup new right away this was vaccine related. A homeopath prescribed Thujia (forgive my spelling Im tired!!) and as soon as the next day this pup was returning to normal. I'll wont let any of our pups have a 5 way combo, and I actually now follow the jean dodds protocol.

I would seriously consider ever vaccinating your dog again! (options are titre testing and nosodes)

just my .02

I agree with you 100%.

If he EVER does get another vaccination (I guess he'll need rabies eventually?) they are going to give him one at a time and minimal amounts.

I think your dog had too many shots for his little system. We have an Aussie and our vet specifically told us to space out his vacinations because too many shots can be harmful. She was already 20+ pounds when he told us that, so you can imagine what too many shots at one time can do to a poor little puppy like yours.
Good luck

Well Toby is doing really well, he's back to his normal self.

I'll probably post some pics later tonight. I'm so relived. It's amazing how attached you can get to a dog in 4 weeks.

I think he's back in action full swing.

I am so grateful that the vet was willing to barter services.
