Monday night Natalie stole 1/2 twinkie out of my roomates hand...a few hours later she had diahrea. I assumed this was caused by the twinkie and was'nt overly concerned about it. Well, every hour after that she had diahrea....I was up all night with her. It was non-stop and she looked miserable. I called the vet in the morning(Tues.) and asked if I should bring her in..they told me to give her chicken & rice and see how she is the next day. By late afternoon, I was a nervous wreck and had a million questions going through my mind...Did she eat something bad? Was she poisoned? Was it something in the backyard? Had I recently used any cleaning products that may have caused this? The more I thought about it the more frustrated and scared I became. I called the vet again and then brought her in. They examined her, did a fecal smear to check for parasites (found none), took her temp.(it was normal). Gave her a shot of something (can't remember what it was called) to make her feel better, sent me home with some pills to help stop the diahrea and told me to continue feeding a bland diet of chicken & rice. The vets diagnosis: she must have eaten something she should'nt have.
She seemed to be feeling much better that evening and no longer had to go to the bathroom every hour but still had diahrea when I let her out the following morning (Wednesday) but was no longer moaning and miserable looking. The vet called to see how she was doing and I told her much better but still had the diahrea but not as bad..she said to continue the bland diet and she would call again on Thursday to find out how she was doing again. Several hours later Sebastian has diahrea! Same symptoms as Natalie but to a lesser extent (he had it every few hours rather than hourly). By Thursday morning when I let Natalie out her stool was still mushy but somewhat formed now..so we are making progress. Today the vet calls to see how Natalie is doing and I tell her she is doing much better but now Sebastian has it! She tells me to start him on the chicken & rice (which I had done already)and see how he does but if he gets any worse bring him in or she will call me again on Saturday to see how they are doing. This evening both dogs seem to be doing much better and hopefully it will be totally cleared up in a few more days. Today I was disgusing the situation with a co-worker when she got a suprised look on her face and said that her dog had the same thing last week! She thought it was caused by her dog eating something outside but now she is not so sure. Im going to mention this to the vet when she calls me on Saturday.
So now my question is - does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? Whatever it is it did not affect the dog that lives in the apartment below mine (we all share the backyard) and it did not seem to affect any of my cats. Its driving me nuts not knowing. I've never seen a dog have diahrea so bad, every hour for nearly 20hrs. like Natalie did....it really gave me quite a scare. Any ideas?

could they have been poisened somehow while they were outside. or maybe did you open a new bag or can of food food that could be contminated? The tests should have showed something if it was a parasite. sorry, not much help but glad to hear your pooches are doing better. I posted here 2 weeks ago because my dog got an eye infection from a dog who was visiting. I went over to my neighbors last week and their dog had green gunk in its eyes. (which we havent seen them in weeks) and their dog has never had before and I am thinking okay what is this, I understand my dog getting it from our friends, but the neighbors dog, before this I had never heard of this and now three dogs within a few weeks. Weird!

Thanks for your reply. They both ate canned Solid Gold before getting sick but one of the cats also stole some of it from them and showed no ill effects. Something in the backyard is the only thing I can think of at this point...but suprised the dog in the apartment below was not affected since he is in the yard much more often then mine. They still have loose stools but are definately showing improvement....I can't wait til they are all cleared up.
