I don't like to feed my dogs dog food. they really do like the soft food in a pouch. I live in a small town were it would be hard to order an expensive dog food, i could, but i would have to pay more in shipping than the food itself. My friend told me that her Vet said if you mix 1/3 cup chicken and 1/4 cup rice and give your dog that 2-3 times a day instead of dog food that it was healthy as long as you cut the fat off of the chicken, well, i tried this one night, and my dog loved it, but i want to know if that is really a healthy choice in my dogs meal

Many feed stores carry better quality dog food, and most small towns have those. A grooming shop is another place to find good foods. Someone else may be able to answer about the chicken and rice...I would think that feeding ONLY that would leave your dog without some important things needed in it's diet. My other concern would be with feeding only soft food...I don't think thats good for their teeth. Try looking into BARF feeding, I think making your own dog food would be great..but I think it will require a bit more than just chicken and rice to make it balanced nutritionally. Jas knows a lot about this...Jas???

daphne, the fact that you are asking...and concerned leaves me with no doubt that you will find the right choice for you and your dog. If you scroll back through this forum, there are tons of posts and links about dog foods, check them out, there were even some good books named.

Your quote: "My friend told me that her Vet said if you mix 1/3 cup chicken and 1/4 cup rice and give your dog that 2-3 times a day instead of dog food that it was healthy as long as you cut the fat off of the chicken, well, i tried this one night, and my dog loved it, but i want to know if that is really a healthy choice in my dogs meal"

****I'm sure the dogs love it but only feeding chicken and rice is not a balanced meal. That would be ok at first transition (and I would also add veggies) but this is not enough of a variety over time. I would also add eggs, yogurt, a fish oil such as salmon oil & give vit e with the oil. Also vitamin C. Plus you will need a bone source or bone meal to ensure there is a correct balance in the calcium/phosphorus/magnesium levels (never give dogs cooked bones).

Without a variety of foods and a balance over time you could do more harm than good by cooking yourself. If you are going to home cook research this topic on the net, and try and find some books. Wendy Volhards book is one worth looking through - I think she supports both home cooked and raw diets.

I feed my dogs a raw food diet consisting of various meats, bone, veggies, fruit & supplements. I prefer raw to home cooked since I believe cooking kills off a lot of the nutrients and those would have to be added back in. My guys are all doing incredibly well on Raw and I am lucky, my vet fully supports me on this.
